New begonias coming in...comments, images?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Ok, as much as I have been plant shopping the last couple of weeks, I finnally broke down and did an online purchase at 2 different places for 10 different begonias. A new addiction for me, I hope I am not in over my head. (well, actually if you saw my patio of pots that now looks like a nursery, you'd think I am in over my head, unless you're a crazy plant nut too!)
So any comments or images anyone can share of my incoming plants would be appreciated.
B. 'Black Ace'
'Amaterasu'
'Cherries & Chocolate'
'Lana'
'Looking Glass'
'Palomar Prince'
'Polomar Whirlwind'
'Plum Georgeous'
'Phoes Cleo'
'Tiger Brocade'

And I picked up a couple at a local store, no name on this one so if anyone can ID it, I would be grateful.

WOW I recognize most of the names, and you have ordered some beauties. Who did you order from?

Well, I ordered most from Glasshouse and took my chance on a good outcome for 2 from Kartuz.

Good choices, Sue. Here's a shot of B. 'Lana', one of my favorite canes. Good bloomer.

PHOE's Cleo.

For those who wonder, PHOE stands for Palm Hammock Orchid Estate, a fantastic nursery in Miami.

ok, those images aren't showing up, must be the new server change today, I just checked Daves' Forum, it will be up and down today.
Thanks Joools, I knew about PHOE, someday would love to visit! Any good places down your way? I will be San Diego in June and would gladly add an extra day or two for some good nursery visits!

Now images are showing up, beautiful!

Sue be sure to visit Kartuz!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I already printed out their info, will have to try to get there on a Friday maybe as they are closed Sun.-Tues.

Santa Barbara, CA(Zone 10b)

Sue - come to Santa Barbara in August. Mike Flaherty is having his big begonia show. It is spectacular! Aug. 17 - 18. Here is picture from last year's show. And you can come visit my garden. Laurie will be down also, I think.

And see if you can get into Ades & Gish down in San Diego. They may be wholesale only but they have an amazing bunch of stuff including begonias.

Oh man, you're killing me! Maybe I'll have to make another drive down.
I will be driving down in June for a Regional daylily meeting and 3 tour gardens on the weekend of the 17th. Two months is long enough to wait before coming again, don't ya think?! (speaking convincingly to DH)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Sue, you, me and Kell should take a road trip. Between the three of us addicts, we ought to be able to give Kartuz' a banner year!

LOL, that was the same way I was a couple of months ago, I read everything I could, googled, looking for images, recomendations, I bought a few off eBay, most were excellant, placed the orders in the first post here, (which I am still waiting for), found some at the Longs in Oakland and most recently, several from Yamagami's in Cupertino and several at the SF Plant Show and some wonderful ones from Lali. I had to slow down, I am running out of room! Some have been planted with large pot combos. I even have that cutting list you posted the other day printed out to look over. So many beautiful ones!

It sure is Sue. I made a run over to Longs in Oakland and Orchards down the road this morning. I came home with 4 new Rex's and two of the shrub begonia's and one Angel Wing.

Thanks for posting the picture's. I am going to love them.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh my, you guys make me nuts. LOL. What great pics.

I keep picking them up too for I say to myself they are small, I can fit them in.

Plus I repotted a bunch last month that they took off. Now I wish I remembered the mix I made.

Oh Lali................ I may be up for a road trip. LOL

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

ohhh, did someone say road?!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Sue as in TRIP!!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

LOL, I was so tired last night I forgot to add that word!!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Well, I emailed both GHW and Kartuz last week, wondering where my plants were. Both replied back pretty quick and put an express note on my orders, both shipped Monday. I got Kartuz's yesterday, nicely packed and in great shape. The Palomar Whirlwind was sold out and the Phoe's Cleo was just last week starting in the propagating so I cancelled both and added B 'Mike Flaherty' and B 'Mr. Hunt'. They had just recently updated their website and they had added so many more choices, those were not initially there back in April.
Here's the 4 from them, top left to right:
'Lana'
'Mr Hunt'
'Mike Flaherty'
'Amaterasu'

Both 'Mr Hunt' and 'Mike Flaherty' are Brad Thompson hybrids.
Mr Hunt, oh so cool leaf! Here's their description.

Quoting:
Upright but full growing to 2 feet on sturdy stems. Leaves get large, even on a small plant. Awesome showy plant with very large deeply muli-cleft leaves. One of the most spectacular of all the upright jointed. First time offered for sale, will sell out fast so order early. Leaves are multicolored up to a foot across with dark veins and center covered with silver and lavendar/silver. Flowers are pink. (Thompson)

And Mr Flaherty, if you check the website (it's a shrub-like), it shows the larger mature palm shape leaves, my favorite!

Quoting:
Tall upright growing to 3 feet. Leaves are dark chocolate brown. Leaves are large and deeply cleft, and fuzzy. Flowers are beautiful clusters of light pink flowers with peach ovaries. Easy to grow, beautiful and unusual specimen plant. (Thompson)

And it is all your fault, Sue. I have been so good for about 3 days too.

Oh my, that is quite an order.
I did write above that they told me Palamor Whirlwindl is sold out so of you accepted substitutions, you may get one. And I placed my order April 18 and it wasn't until I contacted them last week that I heard anything. They wrote that they noted I didn't want subs so were working on completeing my order. That's when I cancelled the two and requested the other new ones.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So I am dense. LOL.
Say again:
I did write above that they told me Palamor Whirlwindl is sold out so of you accepted substitutions, you may get one.

So were they holding your order till they had them all in?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I think that was the plan so I cancelled that one and the Phoe's Cleo because they said they were just starting the cuttings last week and asked if I could wait on it. I opted for the two new ones instead. They wrote

Quoting:
B. Palomar Whirlwind is sold out temporarily, and B. Phoe’s Cleo is now going into propagation. We would like to wait another three weeks for availability, or if you, prefer, we can cancel this order.

I had waited long enough. I am happy with what I got now.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

But what would I get when you said I might get one?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

a substitution, sorry, my thinking doesn't always come across in what I write. I mean if you said Yes to accepting a sub., you may get one.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. I am the one that is so blonde here. What might I have gotten had I said YES to a substitution. LOL. Send me back to kindergarten.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

LOL, well, pick out an expensive one, maybe they will go for it. They all are quite pricey for the little 3" pots! But you know, desperate times calls for desperate measure..or maybe that doesn't apply here, maybe it's just the silly plant addictions that gets us!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm pretty sure it's the addiction. I loose all sense of reason when I'm near a begonia or gesneriad! It's a sad thing to witness, really it is...
