CLOSED: Wanted: Daylilies or ? Trade Variegated Japanese Sedge Grass

Tiffin, OH(Zone 5b)

Hello, I'm new to Dave's Garden, but thought I would try this. I would appreciate receiving some daylilies or a japanese painted fern, or some heuchera (with the purple leaves) or some perennials you have found to do well in shade, appropriate for zone 5.

I have for trade a grass that is similar to (or is?) Variegated Japanese Sedge grass. I picked it up about 25 years ago at someone's garage sale (so I don't know its exact name), but it is a wonderful filler grass that grows in zone 5 in sunny or part sun-part shade spots. It grows about 2 feet tall and its leaves are green in the middle and outlined in white. It doesn't do as well in real shady spots - but it still grows - just doesn't spread very quickly, but it always comes back. In other words I've tried it just about everywhere and it still grows! It is great to fill in those bare spots you don't know what else to do with. I have it as a border that is edging a patio planter, so it can grow back to the "dead' triangle where the house meets the octagon patio. I also have it in a shady area where hostas and groundcovers and other semi-shade loving plants live. It grows there, but is most prolific in sunny areas. I wouldn't say it is invasive, at least in zone 5 it isn't. I have grown it in clay or normal soil. It gets bigger each year, but doesn't take over the garden. You can always dig out what you don't want.

It holds its shape well and droops gracefully. Exactly Now (or within the next few weeks) is the time to dig it up though! It will transplant later, but for best result with less wilting - now is the time, before it gets too big. You can transplant it when it gets its full fronds, but it takes a month or so for it to recover. Actually, you can plant it half dead and it will recover, eventually! It probably would look great in pots, but I haven't tried it. Great Idea! I think I will! LOL! So, if you want a great filler grass that is hard to kill and adds some white color to the garden - please contact me! Thanks so Much! I will try to take a picture of it to email to you.

Oops! I think I goofed! This must not be Variegated Japanese Sedge Grass because that grass is white edged in green and this grass is the exact opposite, green edged with white. Anyone know the name of this grass? It grows about 2 feet tall.

Lena,
I have pink bleeding heart that does well in shade. I also have patriot hosta if you are interested.

Hi Laurrie!

Your plants are on their way to you! This has been so much FUN! I sent you a longer email elsewhere. Here's a picture of the grass as it looks in its natural setting. Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to receiving the daylilies! Keep in touch this summer!

Hi Sunlover,

I would be happy to trade some grass for your hosta! I do not have a dark green variagated hosta. My variagated is a lighter green. If you would like to trade hostas, that'd be great too! I'd really LOVE a blue hosta if you have one of those! I have bleeding hearts, so I don't need those, but am always interested in hostas!

Thanks so much for contacting me!

Hi Mary,
I have some blue sieboldiana hosta I can send for a trade of your grass. Let me know, thanks!

Hi Diana,

That's be GREAT! I spent more time than I care to admit last night on the internet drooling over all the different blue hosta's! Could we do one for one? Could I do a clump about the size of grapefruit for one of your hostas? I have another trade pending and will close after this one with you, so I don't deplete my supply of grass. I could trade a variagated hosta for a blue one too or some shasta daisies.

Thanks for contacting me!

Hi Mary,
This particular hosta doesn't like where I have it and I had planned to move it anyway. It's not big yet, at least the aboveground part isn't, so how about let me dig and send it out to you on Monday, and then you judge after you get it how much grass you want to send in return. I'm going to put the grass in a pot for now so I don't need a large amount at any rate, just enough for a good start. I think it's really pretty, thanks for the trade :)

Hi Diana,

That would be fine. It doesn't matter to me how big it is - I just want one, any one! LOL!
I will send you d-mail with my address and you can respond with your address, that is if I can figure out how to do it! Very new to this.

thanks,
Mary

Hi Steve,

I have sent you D-mail and with your trade, I will Close my trading. Thank you all for your interest. If all goes well, I will trade this same grass next year.
