So much landscaping so little time!

Hopewell, OH(Zone 6a)

We had this house built last year. This is our first house and have never, ever gardened before. We have patches of grass here and there (as you can see from the picture below). And now the dandelions are taking over.
But we are going to start landscaping this spring, adding trees, beds, and trying to improve the lawn situation. For now we are just going to concentrate on the front of the house, because the other five acres just seems too overwhelming to think about. I have been lurking around DG for about a month now reading and studying the wealth of information, and now I think that I am ready to start breaking ground. The soil here is mostly clay, so I had 20 tons of topsoil hauled in to prepare the beds and start spreading over the lawn areas. Any advice that folks have would be great.
