Every so often something from the past just leaps out a you. Today DH and I ended up in the little town of Ogema where we spotted a gas station that had been left frozen in time.....
Blast from Canada's Past
The history of the British American Company: http://www.britishamericanoil.ca/history.html
Obviously plants aren't coming up in leaps and bounds at my place yet ;) so I thought I'd start a thread and see if others have pics of places/objects that you'd expect to see in a museum by now.
I also double checked to see if one of the Coca-Cola machines (that served those tiny little bottles) was still there. ;)
was one of the coke machines still there?
Nice to see that there's no snow there for you...... ;-}
LOLOLOL they predicted we might get some last night but we were *blessed* Ü with rain that ranged from 40 - 52 mm ......most fell where snow had been pretty scarce.
Yesterday we were at + 27°C today +10°C was our high. Nice weather is predicted to be here again on Friday.
Unfortunately they didn't keep the coke machine. :( Tho I do still see them on occasion...usually in the small towns.
Now you have an assignment Linda. :)
They also had an old fire wall.....I don't think I've ever seen one in a little prairie village before.

When travelling in Mexico you see the coke machines in little villages -- full of beer aka cerveza- B/A I remember them.
Dated inanda
Is that gas station you found used for something else now? I see the pump area is roped off. It would make a good little museum. We're all getting so citified that these finds are getting rarer and rarer.
Ann
So far they are just using it for storage Ann but Ogema has a little over a thousand people and they are having a trade and fashion show this weekend. 18 miles straight south is of there is the Big Muddy Badlands http://www.bootsnall.com/namericatravelguides/prairie/sep01prairie.shtml http://www.virtualsk.com/current_issue/the_badlands.html so they are becoming a tourist town. I imagine that in the not so distant future the gas station will be set up as one. DH said there was a write up in the newspaper not long ago that Ogema is one little town that isn't going to be boarding up it's windows. http://www.ogema.ca/
And from the above link an award they recently won
The Town of Ogema, Saskatchewan is the recipientOf the Canada Lands Company Sustainable Development Award In the 2005 National Edition of Communities in Bloom
From this, strategies and actions were formulated. Examples that have arisen from these strategies thus far include purchasing the railway track and eventually the grain elevator, attracting an intensive livestock operation, building a motel and most recently, set up a business capable of upgrading rail cars to current standards. Then, of course, there are all the spin-off service industries. The community is becoming increasingly involved in their town by more active volunteerism - a train station like the one the town used to have was found, moved into town and restored both inside and outside, including outstanding landscaping. There is also a 28-building historical village with thousands of artifacts - there has never been public money used for the museum!

BTW Linda (MG99) and esp. those of you who reside in Winnipeg DH just phoned and it's snowing a little south of here. :'(
+27 yesterday and snow today. Didn't someone say something about global warming?????
Lilypon, it's time you and yours do the Jed Clampet thing and pack up your jalopy and head west! Now, Quick before you can change your minds....
Linda ;-}
It's not coming here. It's not. It's NOT coming HERE. no way.....
LOLOLOLOLOLOL :') @ Linda
I'll send some Kleenex, and a rubber raft, your way Brenda.
Thanks Pam, I may need both. Thank Heavens we didn't get the rain they were predicting yesterday. It went north.
I remember BA stations too, and Red & White grocery stores.
I'll have to keep an eye open for the *Red and White*.......there may be some of the grocery stores around with the name still. Small towns aren't too quick with new paint jobs. ;)

Pam Do you know where Milestone is? just south of Regina?
My grandfather owned the Red and White store there for many years - not sure when they bought it but he died in 1956. I have a picture of him and Gma outside the store - an old B/W of course. Sorry I cant scan it in for you. My brother visited there last year when he and his wife came out for the Craik reunion and the store is still there but it is a garage or something similar now.
My other grandfather owned the hotel in Craik ( now alas burned down) and my mother, brother and I lived there during the war when Dad was overseas.
I remember the BA gas stations too.
We came pretty close to Milestone when we were coming back from Ogema Carol (at one point we were about 8 km away)....we had to stop in Regina and visit one or two greenhouses. ;) I'm sorry the family buildings are gone now...I would have stopped and taken pics for you.
