Blue River dinnerplate hibiscus

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Hi all you hibiscus lovers. Several years ago I bought three Blue River hibiscus from Wayside. They are magnificent here, reaching a good 6 feet tall and loaded with huge flowers. I have tried since to get some more, but Wayside has not had them for years.

Does anyone know of a nursery that still has these, or am I sitting on a goldmine. I think Wayside said that it was a sport discovered on the Blue River in Nebraska. I don't know if that is the state for sure, but was the one that popped into my mind and I will go with it. Here is a pic.

Thanks

You can root you own from the new growth. You of course can only use them for your own personal use though. :)

Thanks for the tip, Badseed. I googled Blue River hibiscus and came up with some nurseries that have it. But I think I will try the rooting your own method. Of course I would only use them in my yard! :-D

Blue River ll is a nice one! It sure does get tall. I only have one and I am waiting for it to wake up along with all its other hibiscus kin. LOL I sure do love those huge flowers!

Badseed....I agree....I don't think there is a more spectacular garden plant. Cars stop in front of our house to look at all my hibiscus and wonder what they are. Have a great summer.

Do you grow others?

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Oh, yes! Besides the Blue River, I have red, pink, Lady Baltimore, one that came out a couple of years ago that was supposed to be on the coral side, but looks pink to me. I have 4 of the Pink Swirls coming and two
Sweet Carolines, which look to be a pretty pink. I've never met a perennial hibiscus I didn't love! The only one I don't have is Lord Baltimore. Don't know why, either.

Wow that is one georgeous hibiscus. I would love to have one of those!! I looked it up but only found an unreputable source. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get one of these on line?

paradisefarms.com has some wonderful varieties of hibiscus, including the Blue River 2. I made a wish list for next spring, because I feel that it is just too hot for planting them in Albuq. now. They are two-yr-old plants in 5 1/4" pots. Sure beats those skimpy things I rec'd from Burpees. They haven't taken hold yet.

I thank you for sharing your Blue River blooms. Mine are loaded with buds, but about a week away from blooming. I hve a pink in the backyard that is unwrapping three big buds. I love the way hibiscus open their blooms.

I can't for the life of me remember where I bought this pink, ruffly, beauty. I will be glad to save seeds for anyone interested. This is it's third year. Just a wisp of a thing when I planted it. (probably Burpees or Park Seed). I have never started them from seed, so I need to ask someone who knows if they always flower like the original plant, i.e. same color, etc.

yes I'd be interested in the seed

Beautiful hibiscus Farmer,

I have a pure white one that hasn't bloomed as well as my others. This year it is growing bigger but no blooms yet. I usually get some blooms the last part of July. I do have some buds on my pinks.

I started some from seed this year, am waiting to see what they will do. I also baught some from catalogues that are starting to show some growth, 3 are doing very well, I have them in pots for now. I baught a Lord Baltimore and Crimson. Will post pics when I get them.
