Leaf cutting

(Zone 6a)

Hi, I wanted to do some leaf cuttings from my rex begonia and just need some how to advice...
Maybe this one is silly but can I cut a leaf into a few peices and get a new plant from each peice? Or do I just plant the whole leaf with the part where the stem was in the soil? Is that right? Oh, and how long should it take to get a baby plant? I've got a clear plastic container with a lid that I'm going to put my cuttings in.

Thanks for helping with my 20 questions,

Steve :)

Steve....that was only 4.

i have done a couple of times and have had mixed results....as I remember, putting the stem into constantly moist soil did it for me when I lived up north....(Rochester, NY)

But let the pros tell you more.

Check out this thread - it should answer your question, I think.

Thanks Sharon, the second link showed me just what I needed to know.
I'll have to get started this afternoon.

Good luck, Steve. I hadn't seen that link before I gave it a shot and I think my soil was a little too heavy, plus our weather is so dumb that I've had a real hard time keeping the greenhouse even reasonable. I did have on escargot make ears that I saw a couple of days ago, and a few are still just sitting there. I am just waiting for a few leaves to mature before I try again.

I used 3 leaves and got 6 wedges. Which I put in a little tray of potting soil and covered. I hope I can still use the plants this summer in the garden and I'll have to remember to start a bit earlier next year :)
Happy Gardening, I hope yours work out good too!
