don't know how i didn't think of this before...........but add 1 tbsp of bone meal and blood meal to your potting medium....the blood meal will bring out the colors and the bone meal will strengthen the plant.....try it...your plants will love it!!
forgot about these secret weapons for your soil.............
Thanks Bob. What size pot are those measurements for?
Sharon
Great idea, Bob! I'll be watching to see how much meal to how much potting soil...
I use to put this in my soil-less mix when I was putting all the fancy stuff in !
guys...i put 1 tbs of each in 4 qts of soiless mix....it makes a big difference...usually recommended for bulbs...but i use it with my plumies and all....the color is a major improvement
Take care not to breathe in the powder as you work with it.
anna..yes..that's with anything...especially the vermiculite and perlite....
Thank you so much for the info, Bob. I am repotting things now, and will certainly get these to add to my flowering plants.
Sharon
Where do you get this stuff Bob? LOL..I am always learning something new here :)
lorry they have it at busy bee....8^))
walmart...hd...anyplace really
Yes you find them focusing on it in bulb planting season, but in most of the stores it's there all the time- somebody actually makes a mix, both bone and blood- also when it's time to plant pansys they push blood meal-- I don't know if they do in other places but here in Houston they do. I think that company with red and yellow packaging, "HighYield" I think, is the one HD carries. By the way, blood meal stinks!
april..there is an odor but not much of one...most of the time..they carry Vigaro brand..usually in 3 lb container..that kind of thing...think about 4.00 a bag..etc...adds deeper color and strength to the cell system of plants
Well bob I am willing to try!
Oh cool Bob :) I will have to pick some up next time I am at busy bee and give it a try :)
i think you folks will be impressed with the deeper colors it brings
Not that I recommend it for house plants, but last year I had a small amount of Ironite left and didn't feel that it was worth the effort of putting it away so I dumped it on a potted Bouganvilla- I didn't notice any difference in growth and I had had this Bouganvilla for years and the blooms were consistantly the same color, however after adding iron the flowers were so deep in color it looked like a totally different plant! Does that make any sense Bob? Yes I know everybody is death on Ironite...but would/should a very small amount be added?
well april..all i know is that ironite is a very good product....most of the time bougenvillea don't like/need/fertilizer or any attention..they like to do their thing..but the ironnite certainly didn't hurt...most plants generally speaking...are low in iron...my citrus orchard is always low in nitrogen..(first number....10=50 middle number blossoms....10 final number for root structure..etc....ie 10-50-10....i happen to like 2-10-10 for the tropicals...
