Amaryllis belladonna when dormant?

I 'm wondering if any of the roots remain fleshy after the bulb goes dormant or do they dry up completely?

The ones that were sent to me by a generous DGer had only dried up bits of roots on them. I am waiting to see if they survived the winter... I planted some next to a big rock for winter protection, and I am hoping the south side of our house is a little warmer than the rest of our zone 6b, since I think these are only supposed to be hardy to zone 7. I have not (yet) done any exploratory digging to check on them, so I do not know what they look like now.

I have some that are not potted just now. I'm trying to decide when to pot them or plant them. Hoping that they'll bloom this year too!
