Some new pots

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Here are some new pots that I got not long ago and just have not had chance to post yet. They are really neat. The first one is my favorite, and the picture does not show it the way it really is. It is a beautiful shade of pink that matches the flower. I will try to get a better shot later.

Jesse where the hek did you find these beautiful pots !

Love the pots. Wish I could master the secret of the self watering.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks. I like them because they are sort of short and squatty, if that is a word. LOL. I have another one that is blue but when I got home it was chipped so I have to take it back. DH is so funny sometimes. When ever he gets paid, he will set aside a little bit for my "plant fund". I can buy whatever I want but when it runs out, it runs out. So I am trying to make wise decisions and buy things that I need first, then if any is left, I can but something I want. My plant fund covers anything needed to take care of them or buying them. I am thankful that he now makes sure that I am taken care of in this department. He used to really get upset when I would buy plants but now he acts like they are just part of the family. I think it is great that he is like this now. I used to have to sneak plants in and he never noticed the new ones but I really enjoy showing them to him. I'm glad that he lets me buy them now.

I got them at Walmart. I just love them. And I'm trying to learn how to know when to add more water. So far I've done okay. But I don't want to over-water them.

Very nice!! So, you dropped a pot inside of there, right? Or is it planted right in the new pot.... Wicked?

They're great - thanks for sharing.

The inner pot holds the plant and it sits down inside of the outer pot which you keep filled with water. Well not always filled. I fill it up a little at a time but not all the way up. The inner pot is not glazed on the bottom and a little bit up the side so it soaks in the water. I just love them. So if I don't buy a plant with my money, I can start collecting pots for my most favorite ones. I like to keep most of mine trimmed and small but there are some that I like to grow to be nice and full. I have some other pots like this but they are plain with nothing on them and they look so drab. And for a dollar more I can get these. So I've started collecting these. I think they are so beautiful. There is one that I want to get for my space babies that is bigger but it is so expensive. I will save up for it. I use my plant fund money to keep things going like buying soil and stuff like that and I set a little aside each time to buy a nice pot. I want to keep my space babies nice and full and the bigger pots cost more. But I will save up and get them. The trick to all of this for me is to budget my plant fund money wisely so that I always have the supplies that I need first and then I get something special with some of the money that I have saved for extras.

Sounds like a great plan. Yeah, if not careful, I'm sure we could all spend waaaaay too much on our "addiction"! Dave's Garden has me going in so many directions now, I find I need to be really careful!

Beautiful pots! I like the "squatty" shape & the scallopped edge of the inner pot... I found a couple at a rummage sale that were that shape, and I really like them!

For me, the trick with the self watering pots seems to be only filling the reservoir partway (1/2 inch up the side of the inner pot, max) and using a light soil mix... and even then, there are a couple of AVs that just don't seem to like them. But others thrive in them!

DH and I do something similar with some of our budget categories... I have categories called "landscaping" and "aquarium" and "Jill's stuff", and he has categories called "computer" and "golf" and "Jim's stuff"... and we can spend the money that's saved up in those categories without having to account for it to one another, we just keep track of what's spent. I do have to admit that "landscaping" generally ends up in the red at the end of the year (I do pretty well until those late fall sales on spring flowering bulbs), and then I have to transfer money into it from "Jill's stuff." LOL!

They are lovely, Jesse!

I remember you posting last year about your DH scowling about your plant purchases/acquisitions, and how you had to 'sneak them in'! lol!
He has made quite a turnaround, hasn't he!

Do you plant the plant directly into the inner pot, or do you place a plant that's already potted into that inner pot?

I have one of these that my mom bought for me at a rummage sale, but have never used it, so am curious as to whether to plant directly in the pot.???

We do that after all the bills are paid and enough money sent aside for gas, food and emergency savings even is a little bit has to come first !
I never had luck with the two piece they were either to wet or two dry. I bought too many when I first started growing only to join a local group to find they were not good to grow.
One thing Salt build up is a problem . With no drainage. Drainage is importanta. Also leaching your plants once a month is also important.
I now have given most away with blooming plants in them to people ! And the others I stick a plant in a plastic pot in them to look pretty !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

These are too cute Jesse :)

I am with you too Allison :) i killed a couple in pots like that. I just have no luck with them :(

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I have used those pots before and love them, only they are too expensive to do more than a few, for me any way.
Jesse the pots and the AVs look beautiful.

Thanks everyone. So far I have had pretty good luck with them. I think that some plants just don't like them but most I've tried do. I think my biggest problem is wanting to add water every time the outside pot gets low. So I try not to over water so that the plants don't stay wet too much. I like these a lot better than the other ones I was using. I am still using the older ones but I do not like them as well. I think both pots are way too deep and the violets just don't like that. But these new ones are squatty and I think the violets like them much better.

One other problem may be in the fact of just adding water every time they need it. I have noticed the water left in the bottom of the pot gets pretty yucky looking. So I think it is important to wash this pot (the outside pot) out maybe once a month. And at that time it is probably a good time to water from the top like Allison said to get rid of the build-up of salt. I would like to eventually replace the 4 that are too deep with 4 new ones when I get the money.

I am also trying an experiment using the Watermaid on two of my violets. I put the two plants on them a couple of days ago and so far they are doing well. Here is a picture of Rainbow's Limelight on one of them. This was taken two days ago and today she is starting to really open up. I can't wait to see her in full bloom.

Jesse how do the watermaids work ? Where is the water kept ? I know I could never afford thmfor all my plants but they seem interesting. I bought one of the miniwells for $ 3.00 from Optimara to try and did not like how it worked for me.Glad I just tried one.

I have observed with two of my AV in self watering pots, that it appears to depend on the particular pot, and I guess, how it was made. I have one in a larger 5 inch pot that slurps up the water in no time and the other in a smaller 4" pot that consistantly takes much longer to obsorb the water. Interesting.

I was wondering about putting my EverGrace in one of the bigger 6" pots and buying one of those ring supports to put around her. I want to have her as one of my plants that I grow and not one that I keep taking the leaves off to share. I think we all should keep a few favorites around to have something beautiful to look at. So since the Everfloris plants get so large, I was wondering about getting the larger pot when she gets bigger and put a ring support around her. What do you guys think?

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well you already have dozens of leaves of her down so you'll have lot's of her to share !
I say don't put any plant into a six inxh pot until it's 18 inches across and it's root system can handle it.
I have a plant that grows Large and I put it into a 5 inch azeal pot. I am glad I went from 4 inch to five it's a big diifference and 6 would have been too large. There are 4 and half inch sizes too.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

That is a good idea. I think I need to get a few 5" pots. I am trying to remember what those are that HD sell for the bigger ones. I can't remember if it is 5" or 6". I will have to check on that tomorrow.
