Species Tulips

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Anyone have any species? Here is my fav-t. turkestanica, up close and personal. It's actually a very small flower.

I have quite a few but none are close to opening yet. T. turkestanica is usually my first to open. The buds are just visible now.

My other species include:
T. batalinii
T. clusiana
T. kolpakoskiana
T. maximowiczii
T. praestans
T. tarda
T. 'Little Princess' and 'Little Beauty' which are hybrids of T. hageri
T. vvedenski

at the botancial garden we have the above plus T. bakeri, T. pulchella and T. humilis.

Here is T. batalinii 'Bright Gem' from last May

Carol and Todd,
WOW! Guess I'll get more this year. Especially love T. batalinii 'Bright Gem'. I have a bunch of Heart's Delight.

Do either of you recognize this one. It was here when I moved here. I bought Heart's Delight thinking it was the same but it's not.

Maybe Ancilla. I have a similar one. I also have quite a few of the Kaufmanniana and Greigii selection but I listed only the pure 'species' that I have.

Me, too. I really think I have only one. Will you post yours as they bloom, Todd? I'd like to get more.

Todd and Boojum - The photos are a real treat! where do you guys buy your species tulips? Mail order source? Do the deer bother the species tulips? (Is this is a silly question!)

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I got mine from John Scheepers. I don't have much munching from deer (prolly cause they have lots of food sources that are tastier), so I'm not a good one to ask. I do have moles and voles so I usually plant my bulbs near the entrances to the house. The traffic scares them away.

boojum - thanks for the source. I may give the species tulips a try this fall.

Very pretty boojum and Todd.....I love these little ones, but they close up when the sun isn't out....so I keep missing mine! I will have to wait for the weekend when I am home at a decent hour....I have the turkestanica and another maroon one that is a bit taller...(can't remember the name) a bunch more are on their way....not blooming yet. I'll try to get some pics and track down the names.
