Strawberry Begonia

Silver Spring, MD

Anyone heard of this plant. I just bought one. The leaves are like begonia's and it sends out trailers with tiny plants on the end like a strawberry plant. Should be fun to watch and share.

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

i saw one in my miracle gro encyclopedia for plants and i love it!! i haven't found one around here yet. good luck with yours :)

Sounds like it grows like Epsicas

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Strawberry begonias have been around for at least 25 years that I can remember.
I saw some the other day at lowes. I believe they got their original name because of the strawberry like growth of sending new plantlets out on long stems.

Beautiful plant. Thanks for sharing !

It's a hardy perennial here Nanna, in fact I bought one yesterday while nursery hopping with Kell and Zuzu. Actually what I bought was a selaginella for my terrarium (cant miss the boat on that since everyone is doing them) and there was a selaginella hitchhiker. I had looked at the same one in a one gallon can but didn't want to pay that price. The one I found has neat burgundy veins.

Don't you love the leaves!

Lilburn, GA

beautiful plant, Nanna!

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Beautiful plant, Nanna!
I, too, have a "Strawberry Begonia" - lots of little plantlets hanging from it. I would share a picture but it's out at my sis's place in the greenhouse.
There is also a "variegated" version - whiter/creamier leaves with pink & green. Had one many years ago but haven't seen one since.

Hey, and did you see in PF photo caption that Toxi managed to overwinter hers under pine mulch in zone 6? Cool!

Wonderful foliage! It looks easy to propagate, too, with those runners... ;-)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's the one I bought yesterday Ali. I love their foliage. I got some fun stuff yesterday.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW you hit the jackpot did you buy all those ?
I'd love to get a number 4 and 7. Oh my gorgous
Thanks for sharing !

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

no, I only came home with two. not much was blooming, our season is so wacky now with all the rain (30 days of it) so I'll go back in a few weeks once we get some sunshine. Not to buy more, I'm about maxed out for space, but to drool.

we also went to California Carnavores

I'm Cool. I love the red folage on yours. My plant is very small. Paid 1.99. Hey, it will grow.....I hope.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

1.99 thats all wow it's beautiful. They are both beautiful plants !

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

oh it will grow! I saw some real cool ones yesterday at this new nursery. Just had to behave myself. Until it stops raining and I can get out and work the flower beds, I need to not go nutty at the nurseries.
I did get this cool viola (perennial) since the bed was worked last fall, I can pop it in, IF it ever quits raining here.

I also had to come home with a box of $4 streps that are HUGE, noid's but lovely none the less. We went to a wholesale nursery that opens a portion to the public. Begonias for $3.99 and such. Kell brought me two streps and a lovely begonia too.

If I can pluck a baby off that one, I'll send in in a future box. plus if you like rexies, mine are all starting to leaf out again.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh my goodness . Now how large is this last plant you posted ? So cute.

Silver Spring, MD

Love the pictures. You can hijack me anytime.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Ali, it's in a 4" pot. It reminds me of the Chia Heads, it's a selaginella like the plant in the pot with the hitch hiking strawberry begonia, but it's a tight compact little thing, not a sprawler. Isn't it a cutie.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes it's cute. Will it bloom ?

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Hi. I have Strawberry Begonia also. Mine are outside in a cool, damp & shady flower bed. I started with a little handfull about 2 years a go and now I'm thinking of pulling it up because it is taking over. I would keep it in a pot unless you want a ground cover.

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

okay i am sold on the strawberry begonia! going looking for one around here. maybe i will find one. they are very pretty and i love the little plantlets hanging down.

lovesdaylillies.,
Don't go looking for some. I have plenty. Will be glad to send you some if you'd like.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes they can be very invasive plants if your not looking for ground covering.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)
