I'm sure someone has gone over this already...but...how often and when do you all re-pot your Christmas Cactus'? I have a VERY established one. Not sure that she needs to be potted up...just know it's been YEARS (read: probably 6) since I repotted her the last time. I know...shame on me...but she seems very content in her old dirt and pot. Don't fix it if it ain't broke...ya know?
Re-potting Christmas Cactus Q's
Do you mean repot or pot on? It is my understanding that they do very well in small pots and are OK being somewhat root bound. I have a huge one that has been in the same pot for about 14 years! Goodness knows what the soil is like--- if there is any in there! Some of other medium sizes have been in the same pots for years. I did pot on from the small size some came in at Xmas to a slightly larger one at some point but that is all . Except for my giant they are only in 4 or 6 inch pots.
Thoughts anyone on how often you change out the soil on these guys?
Chantell, since it has been that long, I would. You will probably get more blooms next year with fresher soil. You current soil probably has no nutrients left in it.
Clare,
So glad you "checked in" - hate to post in non-related forums so was hoping you'd peek over "here." When is the best time of year to do that?
Chantell
Chantell, it is probably best to transplant in warm weather. Do you keep yours outside in the shade in the spring and summer? Probably anytime in the spring as soon as temps are above 50 at night. Then the roots have time to get established into the new soil before cooler weather and shorter days come, followed by the blooming period.
Sounds good Clare! Honestly - I've always left her in the same ole spot...all four seasons...my kitchen. She'd probably like it outside...might start acclimating her now.
