Oh! Wow! what lovely color of columbine. I had never seen that deep purple.
Josephine.
Thanks, Josephine! I don't know what they are called but I have them come up from seed everywhere.
Well, I must say that you are really lucky.
trunnels, your beautiful olumbine look like "Winky Blue and White" which is an Aquilegia vulgaris cultivar. The plants are smaller than the regular columbines. Did you plant some and more are coming up from seed or did they just appear in your yard by themselves?

I wonder if they would grow here. I heard from somebody at a nursery that Hinkley was the only one that would survive here. Do you think it's worth a try?
My Columbine 'Spring Magic Blue & White' came back this year and is blooming nicely. But unfortunately I don't see any coming up from seeds scattered last year.

Mary Lee, I saw the "Winky Blue and White" as well as the "Winky Red and White" and at Home Depot 2 years ago and wanted to buy some, but I was afraid to do so because I had heard that these cultivars wouldn't do well here. But, it may be worth a try.
Here's the "Winky Red and White":

The 'Winky' Series are more compact and more sturdy than the Hinkley.

Hazel, I had some similar to that once. They reseeded and came back once. But oh man were they ever awsome! I think I stuck the tag in the dirt.
I just went out and looked. They were Origami Red and White. They didn't reseed this time.:(
I saw some red and white comlumbines at HEB the other day. I'll look at the tag next time I go. If it's Winky, I'll take a chance on them.

Hazel, I believe you are right about mine being the Winky Blue and White. At least it certainly looks like it! I planted one a few years ago and whenever it makes seeds I just scatter them around. It seems like it takes a couple of years for the new batch to bloom, though.
How lucky you are that they came up. They are so beautiful.
