How's this for a nearly black streptocarpus...a friend grew this from a leaf cutting...what a spectacular colour; just like velvet.
Near to black
todd very exciting...it certainly is spectacular..
Very nice Todd ! Did your frined give you the name of it ? I've had a couple like this.
Welcome to our wonderful African Violets and Gesneriads forum ! Hope you can hang out often . Thanks for sharing you plant with us. Allison
wow! welcome i am new here myself. this is this first black one i have seen.
kelly :)
very beautiful!
There was no name attached unfortunately. We have this 'black' one growing at the Botanical garden where I work. We have 7 different Streptocarpus selections, this one makes 8. The rest are pretty standard. We don't deal with tropical plants at our BG...those in the collection are plants brought in by employees to beautify the greenhouse. We growing mostly hardy perennials, especialy alpines. However, we do have two hardy gesneriads, Haberlea and Ramonda. Here's the Ramonda from our BG.
Todd these are simply stunning :) thanks so much for sharing with us :) and welcome to the Gessie board :)
Wonderful photos! I love the bits of purple in the nearly black one.... very striking!
What I would not give for haberlea :) I have never seen it before but now I need to try and find it :)
May need to find ramonda too :)
You may be too warm in Florida for those...they hail from the mountains of Greece and are snow-covered for 4-6 months of the year!
Oh bummer :( no fair! no fair!
Thanks for letting me know though...saved me the research of finding out their growing zones :)
I have to say though..they are just lovely! Even if I can just look at them in photos :)

Thanks Todd now we want these also !
I sowed seeds of Ramonda myconi 'Alba' last December. The plants are now about the size of a dime. Seeds of Ramonda pyrenaica are just sprouting. Both ramonda and haberlea do very well in our alpine house. Cold but dry in winter. They have survived -10 F with no problems. Very tough for a gesneriad.
ooh, the 'near black' one is *fabulous*!!
I fear you may be getting me started on collecting more plants;)
Hmm I wonder if I could grow them inside as a house plant..Allison you may have something going there :)
Laurie sent me a link of someone selling it. I may just need to try!
Can I see the link Lorry please. I donnnnnnnnn't see why not. All the other gessie's grow outside. Every house plant grew outside at one time or another.
Here is the link Laurie sent me
