digging up grape hyacinth

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

My neighbor has some grape hyacinth she doesn't want, but I don't know how or when to dig these up and they are too pretty to mess up. How do I do this?
Thanks, Mary Lee

I dug some recently. You can dig them now or wait 'til they stop blooming. I just potted mine up temporarily and will plant them in the ground in the Fall. I put mine in semi-shade so they won't be too stressed. Let the foliage die back naturally and don't let the pot dry out.

Does it have to stay wet all the time or only til the foliage dies back? And how deep are they in the ground?

silver,
I just meant to water the container occasionally so it won't completely dry out- they might die. I don't know if you discontinue watering after the foliage dies down. My other spring bulbs get water all summer after they go dormant w/o any problems- except my naked ladies.
I stuck mine in the soil to about the same depth they were growing at- about 3 inches in my case.

I'm sorry I'm not more help- hopefully one of our bulb experts will stop by and give you better advice.

Berrygirl, thanks for your advice. Personal experience is very valuable info. And any info is more than what I started with.:)

I am not a "bulb expert" but I dig them all the time (as well as other bulbs) when they are in bloom or not and just plant them right back in the ground at the same level they were. Works every time.

levilya,
I'm no expert either- lol! I too usually put them right back in the ground. I just got these and haven't figured out where to put them yet.

Put them in the ground! I have these all over my yard and am constantly digging them up accidentally and just sticking them back in the ground However If they are flowering maybe better to wait.

Thanks for all your advice. It's very helpful. I think they did finish blooming so I'll try it.
