CLOSED: Banana For Trade

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Here is the pic of the parents of the banana pups I have for trade for some fancy daylilies. I live in zone 8b and they did not go dormant this winter as you can see by the way the leaves are shredded from last year's tropical Storm Cindy.

I have two nanners left to trade for fancy daylilies. The oakleaf hydrangeas are gone. Momma Nanner is in bloom and looks AWESOME. Here is a pic of her bloom.

you have no idea the name of this or how cold hardy it is, right? does it grow edible bananas? as i was told that most of the edible banana trees would not grow in my 8a garden. thanks. barbara allison

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

I have no idea. The trees were here when I moved in and I don't know what they are. It is pretty cold hardy as the big trees did not go dormant this winter. We had a couple of hard freezes...not like we had when I lived in the Midwest, but down in the upper 20s at least. You can tell from the pic that the big trees still ahve the tattered leaves from last year's tropical storms, so they held up really well through the winter.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i just realized you live in the same zone as i. are these bananas edible or you probably don't know that yet either? what kind of daylily are you looking for? i have some munson daylilies.....aisha and imperial inca. just pretty colors to me but not fancy by today's standards. i have some others that are either not ready to divide or i have not checked their bloom for accuracy to name. i do have russian easter too.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Yep, we are in the same zone. I had two stands of nanners...the ones that were sheltered by the house didn't go dormant...the ones that were exposed to the North wind went dormant. I gave those to my sis in exhchange for a whole bunch of plants (it's been three weeks since she came down and I still don't have them all in the ground! LOL!)

I could send you two pups for Aisha, Imperial Inca, and Russian Easter, if that is OK with you. I plan to dig tomorrow and ship Monday. Tropicman told me to dig two days before I ship and ship the roots dry so they don't get root rot. If you wnt to do the trade, let me know ASAP. No idea about the edible fruit or not. So far my bloom looks just like Tropicman's bloom...and his are edible. But I won't know till Momma finishes blooming and they ripen.

You do know that when they bloom and fryuit, the parent plant dies, don't you. But after the parent dies, it puts up lots of pups that grow to new trees. Also, when the parent dies, it literally falls down and the old dead trunk can be mulched as it is very rich in potassium, just like bananas...and most plnats love the potassium from the mulch.

Let me know about the trade as soon as you can. I need to know how many I need to dig tomorrow.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i want 'em. i can only send one fan of each but they are big plants. do you have any other plants for trade............i do have some other stuff if you are interested in upping the ante so to speak. thanks. barb what 's growing wild where you are?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

also, is your address correct that is in the address exchange? i am in there too. barb

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Yep, that is my address. Growing wild around here I have some weird bamboo that is a lot like horsetails...with the fluffy tops like pompous grass. It grows quite large and can be pretty invasive. I have some black cherry sprouting up under my magnolia. Around here it can get bagworms in it, but over there it might be OK. The trees are kind of pretty and they grow fast. Wisteria grows like mad. The woods are full of it...other than that, kudzu is king. LOL!

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Oh, I have four HUGE clumps of pompus grass that I could dig some up for trade. Not sure how to go about digging it up and splitting it, but I'm sure I can figure it out. It can't be that hard! LOL!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i will write up all that i have when i come home today. i am old but i have kids 10 and 11. we are going out and my daughter already told me that she doesn't want me to write anything this time. hahahah talk tonight. barb

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Hve fun...talk to you tonight. I'm headed out to dig in the dirt...got to dig beds for the azaleas now.....

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

oh, send me some kudzu. what do i have? blue spiderwort with yellow anthers. turk's cap shrub (malvaviscus arboreus drummondii), spider lilies, brazilian vervain, brazilian rock rose, some woodland violets, ox-eyed daisies, grape hyacinths, mucho daffodils, unknown canna, bearded iris unknown mixed, blue mist flower, mexican bluebells (ruellia family but these get to be about 2-3 ft.tall), pink oxalis, mixed glads (leftover bulbs that i never got in the ground), i might have a blue salvia like rose queen only blue and i can;t think of the name. lmk if any of this interests you. and we'll go from there. my brain is dead right now. what i would like would be to trade flat rate boxes if you want to. i want your banana pups, a black cherry or two, and as many wisteria vines as you can fit in the box. don't know how big your pups are so i know that will limit what you can send. i would even be interested in paying for shipping on a whole box of wisteria if you are game. just lmk. thanks for offering to trade.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

LOL! Actually it is probably illegal to send kudzu. I will have to send the pups in the triangle boxes...they are too long for a flat rate box, plus they need to be shipped separate because the roots have to be dry to protect from rot. Before digging out the area where the black cherry were today I potted up about 8-9 of the black cherry seedlings, just in case you wnted them. I'll send you all of them. I'll see what I can do about going tromping through the woods to get you some wisteria. My sis had given me some that she had made into a 'tree' by staking it and wrapping it to pull it all into one bush that, when it is in full growth, looks like an umbrella. She had to cut it back before she brought it because ti had to ride in the back of her truck at 70 mph for 100 miles. It is having a little trouble coming back from the shock, but I hdded anotyher vine that was healthy to it to make it look less bare while it recovers...you can grow it on a fence, or up a tree. Here, it takes over the woods.

I'll have to go through your list and see what they all look like. I'll get back to you.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Let me see if I can dig any of the wild wisteria round here. It is going to be tricky because the ground is so hard, I usually hae to saturate the ground before I can dig anything...so digging out in the woods might not be viable. Before we learned to use water to dig, my son broke a brand new shovel off at the head. It is like trying to dig into solid brick or rock...till the water saturates the ground. And we can't rely on rain because we have a La Nina year and we got less thn an inch last month when we normally get over 6 inches. If I can dig the wisteria, maybe I could fill a flat rate box for you in exchange for some grape hyacinth, bearded iris, and the glads (or some combination thereof). I'll get back to you as soon as I figure this out. LOL!

Meanwhile, let's go ahead and send the pups and daylily exchange this coming week because I have the pups dug up and their roots curing for the ride, so I need to ship them Monday or Tuesday. Is that OK with you? Also, are you in the exchange? If not, I will need you to send me yor address in a Dmail.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i am in the exchange and is that your current address that is listed? and that is fine about shipping bananas/daylilies now. will prob. get them out mon. thank you for those trees. do they grow edible fruit? are they wild cherry trees? i am originally from miss. and i never knew any kind of cherry tree grew in our part of the country. let me ask you something. i have a dwarf variegated banana that froze to the ground here. it was coming back green but now the colors are coming back. this was my first banana. so what i need to know is this.........how do you get a pup up? what i see is about 4-5 different "canna" looking tops coming up. all about 3-5 inches tall. they are growing in a ring sort of. do i dig around the whole thing and just pull the whole bunch up and then separate? how on earth did you get those large ones up without hurting the mama or the babies? and , if i can get them up do you want one? the leaves last year were a chocolately purple and green i think. hard to remember exactly. also another color. really pretty and different.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

what color are the seed heads on your pampas grass? or do you know? do you have any other kind of grass? i have a few stalks of variegated miscanthus sinensis if you want? it's green and white. have no idea what the seed heads look like as i just got this plant last year. but i think this is a common grass. not hard to look up and see a picture. and also, i want a specimen of that bamboo if you would. i will put it in a pot. i love bamboo but i have seen what it can do. i knew a man in miss. that put a few stalks in the ground. he now has a bamboo forest. it grows UNDER the concrete of his driveway.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

The pampas grass is white. I have four clumps of it and am thinking of taking out the smaller clump (although smaller is a relative term with these...they are huge!). I am trying to root some of the bamboo stuff now. I think I will take a pic of it and put it on the ID forum and see if I can find out exactly what it is. Not sure if it is a bamboo or a grass. It kind of looks like a bamboo....but when I cut some down to use for stakes, it cut really easily as if it were a grass. I can probably dig some up, but if I can root it, it will be easier to ship...plus I won't have that problem with the soil being too hard to dig. LOL! Some of the bamboo stuff is TALL! It is growing in a deep ditch near my house and is probably 25-30 feet tall. However, the ones that grow on the side of the ditch are shorter, so it might have just gotten that tall because it needs to in order to get enough light. It is weird looking stuff.

I like bamboo...but regular bamboo...and black bamboo. I don't care for this stuff except that it makes good stakes for thin plants. I'm putting in bamboo and black bamboo as a backdrop for the water garden my sis is going to put in for me. the farmers around here hate it, but it does make a good privacy hedge!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

just be careful with it. where are you from originally? if you are not from the South you just can not imagine how fast something like this bamboo can grow and be unmanageable quickly. and it is not going to stay in one place........the hedge line. the man i told you about has to dig it out with an axe. he literally has a forest of bamboo. it's warm and humid and we have a LONG growing season. i guess he would have to use agent orange to destroy that stuff now.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

I grew up in NW Florida, so I know about the heat and humidity. My sis still lives down there and she is able to keep the bamboo under control in her boggy back yard. She brought me two pots of bamboo and I haven't gottent hem in the gorund yet. I'vwe been keeping the pots watered, but they haven't really put on any new growth in the 3-4 weeks since she brought it. It can't be rootbound becuse it isn't very thick...just a few sprigs of it. But then, summer isnt' here yet and I don't have it in the ground, so that may make a difference.
