Colchicum planting time question

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I may have blown it. I wanted some cochicum for blooming next fall, but last fall I was told (nobody on DG) that they were a spring-planted bulb. After looking at Brent & Becky's site, I'm guessing I was told incorrectly. Can someone give me accurate info? Do you plant them in the spring or in the fall?
Thank you!

Colchicum are best planted in August to mid-September. Many nurseries don't offer them until late Sept. or even October. They will work if planted then, but they actually start sending out roots in late August. They are NEVER spring planted.

Thank you for your quick response. Sadly, I'll have to wait another year for them, but at least I know when to buy and plant them now! Thanks again.

I just put mine outside last weekend. They live in a pot and were pushing up anyway. I leave them outside all Spring and Summer, and they seem content and reproduce rapidly.

andi,
what's the secret to get them blooming? Mine have been in the ground for about 2 yrs but have never bloomed. The foliage is just gorgeous- but no blooms!

I tend to give them the bloombuster over the warm months along with the rest of the plants. They put up a lot of lush foliage, and then tend to bloom in the fall. I've found them to be very low maintenenace. The foliage dies back in late summer, and then they bloom in fall.
