Elephant ear info please!!

I have just moved back to North Carolina and I have elephant ear bulbs(?) if this is what they are called in a circle and there are about 10 HUGE bulbs together. I am thinking if I don't seperate these I will have a jungle in there. Can someone offer information that knows how to gently thin these out. And how do I figure out the type I am dealing with as I have no leaves yet. Help!!

If they don't have leaves, that would be the easiest time to move them. Most of the time if you move them while they are actively growing, you will lose the leaves and they have to start over. Sometimes you can stop them from wilting up if they are not in full sun and if it is warm enough that you can water them a lot. I would almost bet you have Colocasia esculenta if the tubers are huge. Those should be hardy and dependable for you. So long as you dig out 6-12" from them and don't bruise the tubers, they should be fine. My only concern would be a bit of root loss but that should take back off when it warms up. I'm certainly not an expert but with all my growing experience, that would be my best advice.

Hi and thanks for responding. I posted the new thread with the picture before I came to check this one. I think they will be huge, the tubers are very large in diameter! I will have to think about this one as I don't want to hurt any of the roots. I think it will be beautiful once we get the place picked up and add our personal touch, it lends a tropical feel to the country. I needed it!

Hi Bev, You are welcome. You'll have to post some pics for us once you get them all rearranged. :)
