Both my apple and pear tree are shooting up extra stalks / shoots right next to the trunk of the tree. My question is, will these shoots become fruit bearing as well? When digging them up, they are attached to roots of the main tree and someone told me they wont bear fruit at maturity.
Apple and Pear tree sprouts question
1. It is not likely that will bear fruit. 2. almost all fruit trees are grafeted onto root stock. These sprouts would then be from the rootstock which would not be similar to to the fruiting tree.
Would this be the same for trees that are over 50 years old? The pear tree I know is at least 100 years old but I'm not sure the exact age of the apple tree.
Yes, but your odds of having a seedling tree, increases with the age of the tree. The old folks did turn out seedlings and save those which had desirable fruits. If it is a named variety, it will be grafted. The seedlings will not.
