Ely, I know we've been talking about introducing me to the wonderful world of EEs... I had a question... I saw some EE's in bags at the LGS yesterday, and they were these huge tubers, the size of smallish canteloupes! How long do they take to get to that size? I brought a baby EE home from the MidAltantic RU last year, a 'Black Magic' maybe the size of a ping pong ball.... and it did not survive. :-( That made me wary about trying them again. Was that one maybe just too small to be separated from the main tuber? Or did I mess up? Or maybe a bit of both?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Jill, the ones you saw are probably Colocasia esculenta. One the size of your finger can get that big in a season. One that size can get the size of a basketball in a season. When I plant those in part shade, with plenty of moisture they get huge in a hurry. Black magic will not get a tuber like that. Some form huge tubers and others are runners. Black Magic likes plenty of moisture. I have grown them in my pond in gravel. A lot of the time, those will pout and lose all the leaves but if you keep the rootball watered and warm, it will come back.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I would love to have a few. You have mail.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I put my Black Magic baby into a wide pot, about 4 inches deep, with no drainage hole so I could keep it nice & wet. I had some sort of creeping stuff in there too, whose name I've forgotten... the EE died back after a month and never did resurface, so I didn't bring the pot inside that fall (2 months later). It had one small leaf & one tiny leaf when I got it...

I wanted to try the EE's, but I was worried that maybe I just wasn't good with baby ones... But I should probably quit greebling and figure that Badseed & Ely can advise me so I (hopefully) don't kill any more of them!

Ely, I know we've Dmailed about this, but I figured I should post here so you can keep track of the numbers... I would love to trade for whatever variety you have plenty of! :-) I could find room for a couple of dwarf ones, but I probably have space for only one or two plants of the bigger varieties. Please LMK what I can send you in addition to the trailing AVs... I'll be happy to start rooting cuttings of philos, christmas cactus, etc. Thanks so much!!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hey, ely
Do you have any ears left?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have Madagascar Butterfly Bush (Buddleja madagascariensis) (yellow flowering/Fall - mine is currently about 6 ft tall after 2 years of growth, winter hardy in Zone 8b/9a). If that is one of the buddleias that make a tree that you are interested in having, I am always looking for new EEs to add to my collection. If you still have 'Chicago Harlequin' you would like to trade for Madagascar Butterfly Bush or some other tropical, let me know.

Jeremy
