Can anyone tell me if I could put dog hair in my compost pile.....I have 2 Akitas and when they "blow" coat....I have hair by the bagful.... I am not enough of an earth muffin to weave it, though some folks do.
DOGHAIR....
It is protein that would make the worms get tangled 10 years later. Yes it would break down but not at any timing of the other compost material. I use the dog hair in my old egg cartons and pour hot wax in it and use it for starting fires in my fire place. I also put piles of it near my wood pile outside so the mice, squirrels, and birds can use it for nesting material.
I've composted it before. Yes, it seems to work fine.
I've also read that dog fur can be used as a squirrel and chipmunk repellant for around bulb gardens and the like but it doesn't seem to work for me. But then again, it's hard to tell without some sort of control group against which to test.
Like soferdig, I usually leave clumps of it out for the creatures. It's always gone within a day or two.
Although, that might be an easier solution for those of us in the country. If one lives in the city, I'm not sure how the neighbours would take to scads of dog fur rolling the streets like tumbleweeds.
Cheers
Steve
