australian tree fern, gunnera manicata

Lone Oak, TX

I have been trying to grow these plants on and off for about 6 or 7 years. Most of the time they grew rather well until temperature reached above 90F. Then they just died. Does not matter where I put them, in the shade, under trees etc, they just died. I thought I did all the recommended things, yet somehow I failed.

Anybody else has grown these plants with success? I live in Lone Oak, TX (east Texas), zone 7b, about 70 miles due east of Dallas. I just saw somebody on ebay selling gunnera and really want to try again. Should I? Would appreciate any advice, input or suggestions. Thank you.

I have australian tree fern and it barely makes it in my z9a. I really have to keep a close eye on that one. Mine is planted inground, full shade.

Don't know about gunnera, the furthest south I have seen it is at North Haven Garden in Dallas, growing by a little pond they have next to the tropical greenhouse.

I thought I read that one had to be watered from the top down. I was going to buy one until I heard that. But maybe I'm confused - that would be normal.:)
