I discovered several of these worms or cats around my primroses after today's rain. Are they caterpillars or are they harmful worms? Please advise.
Thanks,
Chuck
Is this a caterpillar?
They could be cats, but they look like some sort of grub to me....I don't know if you get them or not in your area, but maybe june bug larva, something like that.
Just a guess.....
Steve
Rule out cat, either japanese beetle larvea,or june bug.
Not June bug. They have a black head and fat bottom. It could be something like a narcissus bulb fly's maggot. A plump greyish white to yellow maggot 1/2'' - 3/4'' long. But it doesn't say anything about perennials or annuals. It does look like a maggot.
It is about 2 inches long. I am sorry I didn't put a point of reference with it. I have never seen one before. They were in the puddle next to the primroses (annuals). I hope we haven't got beetles again.
Thanks,
Chuck
Well, I'm intrigued!
I don't think I've ever gotten that type of bettle before...

I get lots of grubs here. The turf (white grubs) ones are expecially amusing as I have no grass.

Thanks, Janice!!
That solves that problem!! I really appreciate it.
See you at the RU.
Thanks again,
Chuck
Janice,
Which insect deterrent do you use to stop the grub from eating your plants? I have been doing a little research and my mind is boggled. There are so many available but I don't know if they are safe for cats and butterflies as well as hummers. There are several grubs on the north side of my house. I guess I could just pick them up and destroy them but will that get all of them? Ironically, the north side of the house is where I put lawn clippings from our church. I wonder if I got the grubs from them. There are only columbines and primroses on that side of the house. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks again,
Chuck
I cannot say that I really have a problem with them. I always dig up plenty every year when I thin the perennials and redo the veggie garden. They do not seem to bother the tomatoes or flowers and that is all that I ask. I suspect that they feed on the seasonal grass that I turn over when I ammend the vegetable garden. When I had grass, I just used the "toss on the lawn" variety of de-grubber-Scott I think-that they carry at Lowes. Now I toss them all onto the birdfeeding table and let who ever comes by have them for lunch lol. I like to keep my birds happy.
Good Luck
Janice
