I have 13 hardy hibiscus that I have started from seed, they range from 1” to 12”. I repotted them yesterday. What now? I am such a novice at this seed starting business. Do I pinch off the tops?...?
I have 11 plants that I bought from a nursery 2 years ago, the flowers range from 8” to >10” in multiple colors from pure white to pinks to pure red.
I’ve looked for information but have been unable to find much. Please help.
This red is one of my favorite.
Hardy Hibiscus
So far as I know, you don't need to pinch them off. The first year, you usually only get a single stem. Then the next year you will get 2-3 and each year it will get larger. You can cut off the new growth and root it but I don't think I would do it with a single stem seedling.
That red one is wonderful. I don't think I've seen one that color with that kind of leaf on it. I agree with Badseed. You wouldn't gain anything by pinching or cutting them off. I'd just wait until frost is no longer a threat and plant them where you want them. You will have a lot of color from them, I'm sure. Nice pictures. I love Russian Sage.
Thank you for your information. The plants look wonderful in their new pots. It has rained and snowed for 2 days now. I am so ready for spring. I instructed my daughter on how to build a greenhouse for me (I had right shoulder surgery 1 month ago and am having the left one done Monday), all we need to do is put the 6 ml skin on it. The weather is to warm up to 55 today and 60 tomorrow, do you think I can put my plants in it tomorrow, Sat? I have 12 4' grow lights with so many plants, ((in my kitchen)), I can't believe what success I have had from seed. I have 160 tomatoes and around 50 butterfly bush. 9 dantura, 5 flats of petunias....., to many plants to count . After Monday I will have to have help with all the plants. Didn't know the surgeries would be so extensive.
Brugie, I am REALLY wanting to grow Brugs, I have ordered 4 which have not arrived. I am going to your posts to see if I can get advise. Thanks for all, Marie
Oh my, you really have jumped in with both feet. Your yard will look great when all your seedlings grow. You will have so much planting to do!
Your family is lovely. That picture is fantastic with the hibiscus in the background. Your daughter built you a greenhouse? I am impressed. Is it heated? If you are still having snow, you would need a heater I would think.
Good luck on your surgery, Marie! I hope you heal up fast so you can start planting all your beautiful plants.
Marie, I've had hip surgery, twice and am looking at knee surgery this fall, but I've heard they are pretty easy compared to shoulder surgery. I hope your next trip to the hospital will go well for you. Wish we lived close and we could make our therapy trips together. My latest therapy was for a fractured bone in my leg as well as to help my knees get me through the summer. So far, my hired help has done all the work. The yard looks good and I hope that my hibiscus will come back this year. I don't have as many kinds as you do, but they are a nice addition for color and so easy to take care of.
By the way...what does one do with 160 tomato plants? I don't think I could get them all planted. LOL! That is a lot of everything you have growing. I'm glad you will have help.
Well, can you believe that my vegetable garden space is not even ready? Jumping the gun again. I am going to give most of the tomato plants away...family, friends, neighbors, co-workers. I think they will go fast. My neighbor is going to come till as soon as he can get on the ground, and a couple of boy scouts in the neighborhood have agreed to help me this year. I must admit that the greenghouse is rather.....temporary, just to get me by until planting. Hopefully I can put a small heated one up for the winter.
I have done all the designing and work on the yard thus far, a lot of rock work, and I am an RN - much lifting - no wonder my shoulders are messed up. Thanks for well wishes.
Some of the rock work in the background.
Brugie, being an RN that works with surgical pts, I know how hard it is for hip and knee surgical pts to recover. Isn't it good we have gardening and good people to help us when we need? Many of my co-workers love to garden to. It is fun to exchange ideas.
Wish you lived closer, But chating is a nice way to get to know many that have the same interests. Marie
Wow, Marie, that is a load of rock, but it surely is attractive. Do the grandchildren help you or are they all too young? I found that my little granddaughters enjoy almost anything in the yard and greenhouse, but the boys can only think of it as work. Here are a couple of my grands. Sorry, I was a bit lazy and didn't take the time to look up the disc that had their pictures on it. The brug on the bottom row, right side, picture and all, belongs to a member here. Gretchen Kauffman. I have the brug, but don't have pictures yet.
My friend Renee is an RN also.
S.
Brugie, What wonderfun pics. Cute grandaughters. My eyes just soaked in every picture. The brugs are beautiful. Someday I will have some. Do you quilt? I love the log cabin.
I have 7 grandchildren, only 3 live close to me - (waiting for a little grandson the first of May). I have a 5 year old that is excited to help this year.
We are in about the same zone. Just can't wait until spring. Walked out in the yard and saw some hosta, astilbe and fern coming up. Can't wait to see my tulips - I planted them
Dec 23rd and they are coming up very well.
Thank you. I have six grands, none of them live close. I used to quilt. One is started, but after making 12 that I gave away, I just can't get back to sewing again. That and the fact that I have some issues with Arthur in my hands will probably stop me from ever picking it up again. I just came in from my little greenhouse. It is supposed to be cold tonight and I can't let the brug cuttings and seedlings freeze. I hope spring gets to both of us soon. I went to the nursery today and this is what I bought.....oh, and some cabbage plants and onion plants. LOL!
I have made several quilts, none lately though. My mother is 84.5 and quilts for people, she quilts at least one a week and baby quilts inbetween. She is quite an example.
I have been so lazy today. Can't seem to get going. Need to repot some asarina that are getting out of hand, clinging to each other. First year for trying them also.
Spring - get here quick. Marie
I quilt by hand, and it takes me 250 hours to make one quilt. I kind of glad I'm through making them. LOL You have mail.
