Planting seedlings outdoors in Florida

Gainesville, FL(Zone 8b)

Hello All.

The seeds on top of my water heater in the paper towels in the plastic bags (thanks for those tips) are just sprouting. The weather is warm here, but I wonder if it's wise to just plant the seedlings in the ground. Should I put them in small pots first to acclimate to the outdoors? This is my first time with brugs.

Thank you all!

Hi Michele,

I've never lived in Florida and don't know what the climate is like most of the time. I know it can get hot. I think if they were mine, I would pot them until they get a good root ball and then they might be big enough to put in the ground. They might get lost if you put them in the ground so small. I like to move mine up in pot size at least a couple of times before I put them in the ground or their big 20 gallon pots. I'm a firm believer in letting people do what is best for them in their area. Maybe some advice will come along from another Floridian. I hope you have good luck with your babies. Growing from seed is the most fun for me.

Hi Michele,

I used to live in High Springs, just up the road from you. Put those babies in pots until they are at least 4 inches tall and have a few sets of true leaves. I never put anything in the ground until it has developed a good root system. I usually know it's time when I see roots starting to come out of the bottom of the pot. When they are ready to go into the ground, dig your hole at least twice the size of the pot and fill the hole with a good quality potting medium preferably peat based, not soil based (I use ProMix BX) and put the plant in the middle. This gives the roots a chance to really grow into a healthy mass before hitting that sandy soil you have down there. Also with the karst topography in N. Central Florida, water percolation is just a little bit too good and the potting medium will give the plant a good start because it holds moisture better.

Thanks, Brugie and X!

Potting first seemed like the sensible thing to do, but as a newbie, I wanted to get some advice from the experts first!

X, did you have brugs in High Springs? And if so , how did they do?

Thanks again!
