Rookie Broccolli Raab Grower

Collierville, TN(Zone 7a)

Well - I have a really simple question... per broccolli raab plant, how many harvests can I expect? Would it be one? My husband wanted me to produce seedlings for him to grow this spring and I had no idea how many to produce for him so that we could have this veggie frequently.

Like with broccoli you eat the seed heads. Unlike even the sprouting brocolis' the seed head are small and the greens may also be used. You should be able to cut them several times IF you don't allow them to bloom out. There is some difference among cultivars. http://whatscookingamerica.net/Vegetables/BroccoliRaab.htm http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-5-a.html http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MV033

I would recommend direct sowing, culture is about the same as for non bulbing turinps like "Seven Top"

Thank you so much Farmer Dill for your guidance and advice! Very interesting - the links really explained a lot.

I grew the broccoli raab last year. Dummy-me, I thought it would make heads like other broccoli.........but mine was ALL leaves. Actually I didn't know what broccoli raab was. I thought it was another variety of broccoli.
Duh !

Ours continued to leaf out almost all summer. I finally figured out to use it like spinach, cooked with bacon seasoning...................mmmm good.
It was still growing and leafing out in late July when I finally got tired of it and pulled it up. The warm weather didn't seem to bother this particular variety. I still have lots in the freezer. Sorry, I can't remember the variety, but it was a 45 day one. Good luck with yours.
