Any tips appreciated. :)
"Lemon Basil & Borage"
What herbs are easiest to start from seeds?
I think all basils are a breeze. Monarda, anise hyssop, thyme, borage, cilantro, parsley (if I pour boiling water on the planting to speed germination), fennel, dill. All those are very easy.
I concur with Zeppy. My neighbor, in her first attempt, planted bee balm (monarda - red) with Anise Hyssop near her Shasta daisy. By the fourth of July, by accident, she had the most beautiful red, white and blue garden and the hummers loved it.
Dill is by far the easiest...followed by cilantro. You can go to the spice cabinet and get out your coriander seeds....soak them overnight...and plant them. They may well grow in a week or so....my cilantro is thriving in the stones next to the garden.
Dill will germinate when it gets warmer...take your dill seed out of the cabinet and sprinkle it where you want it and work it into the top layer.
Of course....there will be no clue as to the specific type of dill or cilantro you get by shaking out the spice rack....HM
Zeppy, for the parsley, do you really just water in with boiling water?! I'm going to try it from seed this year and I'm game to try anything:) Any specific instructions for that method?
The easiest herb I've grown from seed has been borage, basil and hyssop. The hyssop was in a huge pot and overwintered (mild winters) for 3 years before getting killed off during some icestorms.
I start a couple of flats of basil from seed each year, and I've also started salvias, creeping thyme, etc... For a lot of herbs where you want a multi-branched looking plant in the pot anyway, I find clump transplanting works very well. I recently posted a description of that method together with some other seed starting info on this thread in the propagation forum, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/589725/
HTH!
Thanks much for the info. :))
from the looks fo my herb garden this spring, chamomile (both Roman and German), bronze fennel, catnip, lemon balm, and parsley - and those are just the ones that self seeded.
cinnamon basil , licorice mint, catnip seed for me well .. my licorice mint overwintered
here and its coming back up now , looks like the bumblebees will be happy again this year.
Gosh, yes, on the catnip... it has self seeded all over again here! I keep yanking up extra seedlings & giving them away... My cat can only handle so much nip! LOL
lol, critter, you'll have the cat drug task force out after you!
I m soooo jealous
maybe herbs don't like me:( cilantro is just not doing anything, borage and lemon balm are tiny an i don't see any growth in 2 wks, my basil is just the same not growing in my cold frame, it just doesn't seem to be growing the only thing thatis growing is my parsely , yeah but htat is it.
what could i be doing wrong.?
I actully bought some rosemary and used it in a soup, thththth no taste ( walmart) smells great but tast is awful, just none at all. uuuhhhg
our weather has been weird, cold and rainy lots of wind.
any help is great , thanks
sue
All this cold and rain sure don't help anything but cold weather crops grow I would think. Keep trying!
The basil will grow when the weather warms up....it needs heat. The lemon balm....once it gets going..... will take over. Take a picture of your tiny plant so you can laugh in two years. My borage sat quite still for a long while and only took off a week ago. It looks like you have heat coming to Ohio in the next several days.....they will respond. Hang in there. HM
Don't get discouraged all my herbs are slow coming up this year its been so cold and can't make its mind up here what season we're in.
