I asked this on Vines and Climbers forum and it raised a problem I didn't think about so I am going to ask it here. Has anyone in the cooler zones 4 and under ever grown the Red or the white Cypress Vine? I am thinking of putting it in a container and allowing it to climb the arbour with Trumpet Honeysickle that I have..I am going to container plant it as I don't want it competing with the Honeysuckle..It is a very large and strong arbour so weight is not a concern HOWEVER I have discovered from the other forum that it is a real reseeder and can become quite envasive and I don't want that...It seems to be the warmer zones where there is a problem so I need to know if anyone in the 4 and lower zones (I am in zone 3b) has ever had a problem with reseeding..I really would like to plant this as it is a very pretty flower and the Hummers like it...So any input from anyone would really be appreciated.
Need Input on Cypress Vine Please.
kinnika I've grown many in pots and I've never had one self seed here (or any other higher zone beauty). I'm positive our winter takes care of any self seeding problems it presents those who have much shorter and milder winters than ours. I know weeds in Florida is terrified of many vines (and plants) that can take over her yard.......I'm always tickled pink todiscover any plant (other than a weed) that managed to self seed in my yard (including our *hardy* perennials;).
Lilypon Thank You SOOOO much for that info as I really want to plant these. I have an area that the Himalayan Impatients have taken over so I really don't want another one...Any special secrets about these plants??? If you have a photo please put on as I would love to see it.
You're very welcome :) Make sure you place it's pot in a very sunny and warm spot (given your location I'm sure it will do very well ;) To encourage further flowering pick faded blooms .
For earlier flowers start the seeds now. Germination is more likely if you nick and soak the seeds overnight prior to planting. I just checked PlantFiles and read where some haven't had it bloom till the 2nd or 3rd year (I wonder if they had a cooler summer). http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/93/index.html).
I can't say I fertilized it much either (usually its the potted tropicals on the ground that get it here).
I didn't think to take any pics of mine. :(

kinnika If you have a pic of your Himalayan Impatients please post it.
I really like it. Is it easy to pull? Now that I see it I think one of my neighbours had one a few years ago. She did mention that it did reseed but not in any great amount (I think she had 3 or 4 pop up).
Brug I didn't know that was one of the common names...They are all so called Touch-me-nots..
Lily yes they do reseed very much but I have an area where they can do their thing..I probably remove about 50 plants a year and give them to my Garden Club to sell and we never have enough..If they are planted in a cooler area they don't ripen enough to pop their seeds... I personally really like them as the Hummers like them...Last year we had a pair of hummers that had to have built their nest somewhere in the yard because they brought their young to the flowers to feed...It was so much fun to watch the babies..
I'd like to get a small start of yours kinnika...... I'm going to have to find something to trade with you when we get to Drumheller. I have a feeling my neighbour prolly dead headed hers.....she has a very small garden (a swimming pool is taking up most of her backyard).
Lilypon I will make sure there are extra for you when you come through...Just let me know when..
