I'm going through brug bloom withdrawal...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

This is Apricot Riese. I loved the length of the tendrils and had no intentions of not growing her, but forgot to take a cutting to bring in for the winter. She had a different fragrance too. One person thought it smelled like grapes and another thought licorice.
I would love to have blooms right now, but all we have is rain and gray skies.

OOPS!! The sun is trying to come out and the greenhouse is heating up.

Another picture of her looking into the bloom. She doesn't color up until about the third day.

The brug I really miss is Antique Lace. What a bloomer. Wish I had a full time helper and a greenhouse so I could keep all of them.

The pictures are beautiful Brugie!
We here had a long and cold winter with much snow. I am longing for spring.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Ahh ..Shirley, that is very pretty (o:
Hey, we are closer to beautiful warm weather brug blooms than we were.. lol
Think POSITIVE! Summer is on its way (((o:

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks you two. I sure hope you are right, Alice. After having such a nice Jan. and Feb. it seems like it is taking a long time to get to "true" springtime. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your pictures, Alice. You take such nice ones. They always looks professional. I'm just a point and click picture taker. LOL!

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

No blooms here but I do have a bud :)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That's a beginning, Charlotte. I mailed out some cuttings on Thursday and one of them had tiny buds on it. I have a double pink in water that is well rooted and it will open a bud before long. At least I'll have one to enjoy for a few days while some in the greenhouse are growing buds for me.

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

It's almost here, Brugie! Soon we'll be complaining that it's too hot. :-)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Beautiful blooms Shirley.
Planting out time is still a couple of months away for me but I can't wait till the yard is full of Brugs again. It looks so naked now.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks....I hope you are right Mary. I wouldn't mind complaining about the heat for a change.
Terry, our grass has really greened up since the weekend storms. I think we are getting close here. Tonight we will get frost/freeze. I knew the rhubarb would get nipped at least once. Bring on constant warm nights....I'm ready to plant.

Marysville, WA(Zone 8a)

It'll come soon Shirley. :^) Babying my seedlings is what keeps me pacified until I can get out.
Terry & Shirley I'm curious how long of a grow season you usually get, when are your take-em-out & put-em-back dates?

Here at home my over-wintered cuttings are leafing out, tons of seedlings need to be potted.
Rhubarb , tulips and TB iris finally popping up, grass is green and weeds are too .
Dogs and horses are shedding .........
Found a house fly outside today .................. Spring has begun ;-)

Just wish we had more sunshine tho.

We've had rain Shirley but nothing is greening up yet. It's too cold.
We are supposed to get snow on Tuesday. I hope they are wrong.

grrrnthumb I usually plant the Brugs out about the first week of June.
By the end of Sept. they are dug back up and hauled back into the GH.
I think we had one year when I left them out into the beginning of Oct but that is rare.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Tom, I'm a little luckier than Terry. I can usually get mine out around the first of May and with some frost protection for two or three nights in early Oct., I can leave them out until the third week in October. That usually means that the potted plants live and those in the ground bite the dust. I take the potted ones into the garage for the frosty nights and haul them back out after about three days. I'll take cuttings from the brugs in the ground before the frost, if they are keepers. If Mother Nature would just stop sending those two or three nights of frost, it would sure make my life easier. LOL!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

The temperatures here are dropping contantly since noon. We expect snow this night and tomorrow.

Marysville, WA(Zone 8a)

So Shirley you get about 5 1/2 months, that's not too different from my 6 1/2 months, but Terry, only 4 months? You sure do an amazing job with such a short season. Does the short season cause you not to bother putting them in the ground?
How about you Monika? When are your usual in and out dates? Sorry about your snow. :~/

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

great pictures Brugie, but be thankfull we have had TORNADOES the last three days, roofs off houses, trees and lines down, but I have been lucky, no major damage, sure will be glad to get my Brugs outside, and then maybe I will get blooms,

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

After the 20th of May it should be safe outside for the brugs. I have to bring them in their winterquarter in Mid September because we can expect to get snow in the first October week.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Poor Monika she only has about 4 1/2 months of good Brug weather. I thought we had it bad with 6 months.

I have kept mine in the GH this winter and I had my first bloom about a month ago and it stayed on for 3 weeks. Did it ever smell nice. Now I have 6 that have buds on them. Today I took the six and set them outside in the fresh air for about 4 hours and then put them back in the GH. After I moved them back in, they said, "Thanks they really needed the fresh air and sun". I noticed today I have strawberries poppy through the ground as well as Hostas coming up. Then my redbud tree is putting on buds. I have even picked a batch of asparasus, it must be spring. I love spring and summer.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Doris. There have been some horrible storms and this is just the beginning of the season. I hope you get lots of blooms on your brugs. 100 of them should pretty well smell up the neighborhood. LOL!

Gosh Linda, three weeks would be great to hold a bloom. Wish they would all do that all of the time. Our trees are budding here (Maples) but the redbuds aren't quite there yet. The asparagus should come up before long. I'm sure ready for fresh veggies.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Shirley,
You do or don't still have Apricot Riese?
If I am reading this right you lost her?
~Alice

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yes, I did lose her. It's okay...I have lots of others to grow this year.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Well, here are some of the grandchildren that are blooming today. First is the forever blooming Monster trying its best to cover the neighborhood in eau de brug.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Next up is butterfly, still pail in the cooler weather but doing her best to top Monster's 15 feet. The poor thing is growing at such a pace that the stems split.

Charles Grimaldi. This brug has such fuzzy blossoms that it looks as if it is wearing a winter coat.

And lastly, the first bloom on V. peach with many more to come. It should color up tomorrow. Its smaller leaves look scraggly next to Butterfly's giant ones.

Hi Brugie the pictures are great i hope you have a joyful spring and that you are able to gardening more. to me it is not work but a labor of love. i have about 300 plants different varieties to bring up fromn down cellar next month. Our spring bulbs are popping up all over. the weather has been warm but today and tommoro only in the forties and snow flakes. We have had so far 125 inches of snow we can still have measurible snow in april. Bob

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

frogsrus, what is the real name of Monster? I have three seeds just sprouted.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Great pictures. That Species can sure be a dog, can't it? Some times I have great blooms, but most of the time they are deformed. Thanks for the pictures. I'll never see a 15 ft. brug here. No ceilings high enough. LOL!

Bob, I'll bet the spring flowers will be gorgeous this year for you. I don't envy you all the work you have to do tho. 125 inches of snow is about 110 more than we have had so far. Lucky us. LOL!

Hello Brugie and those who have posted on this thread!!!!

Wonderful pictures... I've been pulling the brugs out of the covered dog runs and I don't know how many I will be able to save.

Mice (yuck, yuck, yuck) have obviously lived in them for a couple of months, eating their roots, making tunnels etc. although I had mice pellets in all the pots. I'll have to have a new plan for next winter, meanwhile I'm doing the best that I can!!

It's good to see all of you posting once again. I stopped coming to the Brug Forum altogether, until I saw on the Forums Listing that some interesting people were once again posting.

I hope to learn a lot more from all of you. Thanks for coming back.

Judy

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Judy, its also nice to see you here again.. missed you when you took a break for a while..

Kris

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Judy I had a couple of moles tunneling through one of my Brug pots.
I set a trap with peanut butter and caught them both before they did too much damage.
They are very destructive little buggers.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Snowhermit, I was a lot under the weather this winter so I was unable to take good care of my plants, but at least I lived to garden again!!! I consider myself BLESSED.

Judy

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hi Judy and Kris. It's good to see you guys again. Judy, I hope you are feeling a lot better. Sorry you are having brug/mice problems, but if you need cuttings this fall, just yell. You too, Kris. Twyla...you know all you have to do is yell too. I'm always willing to share until I run out of cutting material.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks Brugie, you are such a nice lady.

Judy.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I'm sorry to hear you weren't well this winter Judy.
I hope you are feeling better now so that you will be able to enjoy your plants and gardens this summer.
If you lost anything over the winter I'm sure I'll have cuttings later in the season.
