I have a 12X12 greenhouse with wood frame and would like to cover it with regular greenhouse poly this fall but so far have not figured out how to go about it and still have the plastic guaranteed for 3 yrs. Everything I've read says the plastic cannot touch wood and it would cost around $120.00 for two layers so I would definitely want it to last as long as possible! The past three years we have used regular 6 mil plastic and it works ok but deteriorates within a year so has to be changed AT LEAST once a year(sometimes more) , which is a real pain in the rear!
Anyone got any suggestions.................or know where I can get greenhouse 6 mil poly cheaper?
Thanks for any advice!
Greenhouse plastic suggestions please
I have the type of grhouse plastic that you want to buy, and mine touches wood. I have my gable frames built out of wood and there is wood at the base of the house. I do tape with duct tape all the connectors etc that might rip the plastic. I have a 100 ft long grhouse and 2 that are 60 ft long. I buy the longest lasting plastic I can get because I can't stand switching out the plastic. Its a lot of work, and the conditions have to be just right-no wind (lol have done in some wind, picture trying to hang onto that piece of plastic lol), temps have to be fairly warm so you can pull the plastic just so. The second layer has to be within .5-4" above the bottom layer of plastic to get that 10 degree warmer difference when you kick on the airblower motor-anything more or less and you lose it.
I have found that the plastic lasts much longer than they say-I think I have 5-6 yr plastic on now and it has been over 7 yrs, and I may or may not change it this fall. I can't see any wearing right now.
Have the sides go past the wood frame at the base-it will help to hold in heat from under the base, and always fold the plastic under so it doesn't catch water.
As for price-I would check out a lot of greenhouse supply places. I am sure plastic is much more expensive now than 7 yrs ago-I hate to look! lol
I don't see any wearing of the plastic where it hits the wood. I do tape the top of the wood (it is also rounded at the top of the gable) to prevent tearing.
Thanks Tigerlily!
How do you keep the plastic on your house, right now ours is held in place by lathe nailed over duct tape so the blower motor wouldn't work very well ,I would like to figure our a way to use a blower because I think that would help insulate and it wouldn't use as much electric to heat it!
I was also wondering about rounding the edges of the ceiling and peak 2X4's with a router and then covering with some foam insulation like you use on water lines to keep the plastic from touching sharp edges. Do you think that taping and nailing lathe on the first layer and then just wraping side to side without lathe would work, so the fan could blow air inbetween the layers ?
Thanks for your help! Rita
I staple the bottoms of the plastic to the 2x8 at the base of the greenhouse. I use a stapler gun and it is very tedious going on your hands and knees down the length of a 100' greenhouse! 4 times! I usually use more staples on the 2nd layer, but I average about 10-15? staples per layer per one foot.
I just went and looked. He put the last bow at the very end and attached the wood frame of the gable underneath the bow-with clamps and screws. He cut some wood at a triangular end and some on a curve. There is also framed in squares for the door and shutters at one end and the big fan at the other. You have to have wood all around the gable end because you have to bring the ends of the plastic (from the sides) over the gable and attach to the wood with staples. First you put your gable end plastic on and then you bring the big piece of plastic over that (just 6-8" overlap).
I tried to take pictures but the light is too bright, and its hard to see the frame because of the plastic. It's not as clear as 7 yrs ago. lol. I hope this makes sense. Let me know if not.
