Keeping hearing ya'll talk about putting the Plumies in the ground...and for those of us in cooler climates removing them come fall. Anythoughts on how they would fair in nasty clay soil once it's warm enough?
Ground or Pot?
inground? just fine as long as it is full sun.
Oh believe me...my yard faces south-east...it gets FULL sun...LOL. Vossner....I'm beginning to see the ginger coming up from my FL order...had put them in pots in my front windows - and one is just starting to peek thru the soil....I'm so excited!!!
Chantell, you can add compost, dried manure, packaged garden soil, and/or soil conditioner to the first couple feet of the clay before you plunge them if you want to, but it is not necessary. The roots will grow out the drainage holes of the pot with the potting soil, and as long as there is good drainage beneath the pot, all will be well. You won't have to water as often with plunged pots, and they will be more stable during high winds if you get those. If you are not going to plunge and just going to plant the rootballs, then I would recommend amending the soil with something if you can. Amending the soil will also make it easier to dig up the root ball in the fall.
Clare,
Which is better...with pot or without? I was hoping you'd say they'd be ok...was thinking that they'd be "safer" in the ground then on my door step in pots. Rotties inside don't help the plants outside...LOL
Chantell
Gosh, Chantell, I need to let those who plunge and plant in the ground answer you about this one because I have no experience in this area. My intuition tells me that they will grow bigger faster if their root systems are not constrained by a container, but a container is probably easier to pull up in the fall, and the container may provide some protection against shock when the tree is pulled up and stored.
Thank you both, as always, for your insight...I think that sounds perfect!!
