Need Butterfly ID

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

I'm thinking either Pipevine Swallowtail or Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (black female form) as a first guess. Anyone recognize this guy?

the azure blue on his/her back was breathtaking.

This is just my guess, but judging from the two yellow spots on the forewing and the spot where the two hindwings come together it is a "female black form eastern tiger swallowtail" http://www.rlephoto.com/butterflies/swallowtail_et01.html

Ah, so SHE's just pretending to be the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail.

Thanks, Calalily - it figures that a flower would know ; )

What a beautiful butterfly.

Thanks, Texas_Doodlebug, The photo does not do her justice really. The brilliant, shimmering azure blue on her back stood out so beautifully against the intense black of her wings. I'm afraid my camera and I were unable to capture her radiance in full. But, again, thank you very much.

I hope she will return to my garden soon.

Scutler, you're welcome.
