wanted Red Buckeye, ( Aesculus pavia ) plant or seeds
Hello Elva, are you going to the R.U. at College Station?
If you go, I could bring you a potted seed, the only one I have, I gave some away, and the other tree the squirrels ate them, so I brought the last one into the house.
Red Buckeyes are beautiful, but very slow growing, and that is why they are so hard to find. But some nurseries do have them.
You might try googling red buckeye and some murseries will probably show up.
I bought mine locally, at Redenta's Garden here in Arlington.
Please let me know.
Josephine.

Hello,
if you go to ebay, go to Home and Garden and type red buckeye, you'll get to a seller who has this plant for $6/each and shipping of $6 also. It will be mailed by Priority Mail, so will get to you within 2-3 days. I will also order from her. For the last two years i tried to grow the plant from seed. From 49 seeds, 45 sprouted, but then one by one they perish. I still don't know why. I have three little seedlings, but am not sure whether they will grow well. Hope this helps.
Hello Josephine,
thank you for the info. The three sedlings I have are about 3" tall and are two years old. I am glad somebody else has the same kind of result that I got. Thought it was just rotten luck that my seedlings are so small. You made me feel a little bit better.
I have some questions about the plant shown above:
- was the plant sold in 1 Gal or larger size? Am I right in assuming that the plant grow about 8-10" a year?
- is it planted in the shade, under a tree or in full sun?
- does it like more acid or more alkaline soil?
I am sorry to have to ask so many questions, but I am going to order 5 1Gal plants and want to make sure I get it right. I would also appreciate any other info or advice. Thank you.
Sita
Hello Sita, my tree was in a 5 gallon container and about 5 feet tall when i bought it.
It is now about 10 feet tall, and it is planted in semishade, it likes to be an understory tree, not full sun.
As far as the soil, I am not sure, but I have mine planted in a heavily composted and mulched area. I does like plenty of water, mine is next to an Elderberry, and they are both very good friends. I would say you can't go wrong with neutral soil, and as much organic matter as you can incorporate into it, and of course mulch with whatever you have.
We went to a seminar and the presenter said, which is the best kind of mulch?
Free mulch, he said, and I beleive the same way, leaves grass clippings, whatever, just be sure to mulch.
Josephine.
Josephine,
where did you get a 5Gal buckeye from? I have better luck with larger sizes plants, but can't find larger than 1Gal. The seller at ebay said they are about 12" high, and 2 years old. That sort of surprises me as mine are only 3-4" tall. Another seller said hers is 14" tall , 2 years old and budding. Do they really flower that early?
I found contradictory info about this plant, but one thing I know for sure is that this plant is really difficult to grow. If you should find a 5Gal size or larger in the DFW or east Texas area, please let me know. Thank you.
I found mine at Redenta's Garden, and had to wait a long time before I got it, I left them my name and asked that they call me when they received one.
My tree is just beggining to leaf out, right now, but just 4 miles from here at the wildscape, theirs is in full bloom, the same with the Mexican Buckeye, theirs bloomed a lot earlier.
So the fact that they bud at different times could be due to sun exposure, or other things,
so don't worry about the time of budding.
Josephine.
I just ordered two on ebay plus some seeds on the mexican buckeye also got the white blooming bottlebrush buckeye.one of the buckeyes is almost 3 ft tall the other is about 18 inches

FYI: If anyone near Arlington is interested in Red Buckeyes, Redenta's has them right now. I saw them yesterday and they are just gorgeous in bloom! I didn't check the price, I spent all my time admiring the red blooms. Nice tree!
Cathy
Wow! what a coincidence! thank you for letting us know.
Josephine.
Anybody has the phone# of that nursery in Arlington, please post it. Thank you.
Sita, the # for Redentas is 817-469-6786 Good luck,
Josephine.
Well, I got one at the Heard Sale. I wavered back and forth on getting it, but the picture provided by Josephine pushed me over the edge. It is about 2 feet tall and has a bloom spike on it! It was $30. When I left at 4:45pm, they still had 8 left (one less than originally at before the 4pm rush in). If you get there first thing in the morning, you can probably get one. If you don't get one, it's still worth going if you have a chance.
Stacey, what a coincidence, that you should find one Red Buckeye today.
May be Sita will go and get one too.
They are such lovely trees, and one of the very few with red blooms.
I hope your tree will give you a lot of pleasure through the years.
Josephine.
Can anyone tell me how to start the seeds. Do I have to freeze them frist like the Ohio buckeye ?
Elva, here is a link to a thread talking about planting the seeds, I hope it helps.

Hello Josephine,
thanks for letting me know about Redenta's Garden. I went there yesterday and bought one 5Gal pot of red buckeye and one 7Gal of oak-leaf hydrangea. They have some pretty neat stuff, but for right now those were the plants I was looking for.
Now, can you help me find a large staghorn fern? Don't want anything in small pots. Thanks again.
Sita, I am thrilled that you found your Red buckeye, be sure to put up some pictures when it is blooming, I hope it will bring you much pleasure for many years to come.
As to the fern, I have no idea, but I imagine that a nursery specializing in orchids or tropical plants, might carry them.
Josephine.
I planted mine Saturday and she's not a happy camper. When I got it out of the pot, the soil just fell off the roots. There was some soil around the center root but but the feeder roots were free of soil. I backfilled with a mix of native soil, the potting soil from the pot and compost when planting her. She was still very droopy this morning. I hope she makes it through okay!
Stacey, I bet your tree had not grown in the pot where you found it, and the soil around it had just been added and was too loose. I think that if you water it well and maybe mist it once a day, it will probably perk up. I hope it lives for you, it would be very dissapointing to lose it.
Josephine.
They must have recently repotted it. The root showed signs of previously being rootbound because the end was wound around itself and none of the roots even went into the bottom 4 inches of the narrow 12 inch tree pot it was in. I rolled and rolled that pot, and pushed and pushed through the drain holes trying to get it to come out together. But each time I layed it on it's side the soil just fell out from around the plant. Finally, I just dug down with my hands to lift it out with as much soil as possible, but that soil just fell of the roots when I set it in the hole. The potting soil was kind of barky, with not much clumping, so it just did not want to stay together even though it was moist.
It was still moist when I checked it this morning, but misting it is a good idea. I will do that when I get home tonight. Thanks Josephine. :)
You are welcome Stacey, I bet it will do very well with all your tender loving care.
Stacey,
I do hope your plant survives. Just in case you need another one, Northhaven Garden in Dallas has several A. pavia in 1Gal pot for $9/each. Also has mexican buckeye in 5Gal pots for $29.95/each. Good luck.
Thanks Sita! Northhaven's is one of my favorite places. I will have to check them out next time I am in there. That is a good price. Even if the one I bought makes it, I might go buy another to put down in the wildscape.
