What would you consider to be the safest temps to put brug babies outside? Or any brugs? The temps for next week will be in the 40's and 50's at night and 70's and 80's during the day. Our last frost date is April 15th. I just want them to surive and grow. My babies are about 5 inches tall and are getting kinda spindley. They need sun and fresh air!! Last week I pulled them in and out just about every day. Ohhh the things we do for such beautiful blooms!! LOL!
Temps?
We had a heavy frost last year past that frost date, Melanie. Ask me how I know. I had to work even after dark trying to move plants back inside and make makeshift greenhouses with cattle fencing to keep the plants from being frosted on. Like you, I'm eager to get plants outside but with the weird weather we've had the past couple of years, I'm not going to plant anything tropical outside yet.
Depending on size , you can use chicken wire - duct tape where you cut , and the big trash - leaf bags .
Just cut the wire about 3 foot long and tie ends together , slide bag over for - instant mini green house . put a brick or gallon of water in it / on the ground to help keep warm . Buy and stack brick or water so sun hits it now and they will start warming up .
I also use tomatoe baskets turned upside down and put trash bag over .
Tony, by the time I bought chicken wire, brick and garbage bags for all the plants I had, I could build a new greenhouse with the money. That would be fine if you only had a few.
Ada
I remember the ordeal you went through last year. Sure hope you have an easier time this year!
I placed about 10 of my brugs outdoor last week. It's been staying above 40 degrees now and just had to move a few out. I didn't want to move all of them out because I didn't want to move ALL of them back!!! LOL
Added to say
Our Average Last frost date here in my area is May 5th.
Our Safe date is May 22nd.

I so lucked out this year, even though there was snow on the surrounding hills, I has no frost!! My temps did go into the low 30s but no brug damage at all.
In years past, I run out at midnight and lay down my brugs and throw sheets, towels and even blankets over them. It really works for a frost, though I doubt for a deeper freeze.
Tony, I was driving to Watsonville last weekend, and I passed a field that had similar structures all thru it. It took me a minute, and then I realized they were several hundred mini, mini greenhouses. Each one covered one plant.
Ada, some of these are your seedlings that I am trying to save!! LOL!
They were doing so good, now they are starting to get very spindley. So......out in the morning and back in at dusk, for a while anyway.
Thanks
Kin, it gets to be a hassle to move all of them in and out. LOL With the weird weather we've had the past couple of years, you never know what to do except play it by ear. lol
Melanie, hopefully we can move ours outside soon without the fear of a surprise frost. I'm sure ready to get them all out.
