Has roots but no babies

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

What do you do when you have a leaf that is almost completely gone but it has grown roots. This leaf looks terrible but when I pulled it out to throw it away, I saw that it had roots. Do I keep it or toss it? I'm sorry about my hand in the first one but that is the only way I could get the roots to show up so you could see the roots.

Hi Jesse,

Well I am no professional but I would cut the top half off and put it back in soil and it should have babies...I hope!

The leaf is not healthy. Sorry throw it away. A healthy leaf nice and green is always needed for a healthy baby. Not old leaves, not young too small baby leaves, but a mature young middle row healthy green leaf.
As hard as it is to root a leaf, and as long as it takes to grow a healthy baby it is senseless to start with anything but a healthy green leaf.
Sorry it's not healthy just do yourself a favor and throw it away.

Thanks Jesse for posing this question. I have one now. On some of my leaves that have babies the mother leaf is dying. Is this normal? The babies look great. I chose younger leaves and not older ones. i also cut the leaf in half. Most of mine look decent, a few great and then there are these. Thanks, Linda

Now I keep my babies with Mom until their large and if Mom dies and I have a good size baby growing I cut Mom off. But a leaf that's not green and healthy is not going to produce a healthy baby. If the leaf was nice and green crisp healthy and just had a spot that got too wet and went mush yes I'd cut it off. But sorry not in this case.
It is very helpful you posted your picture and question Jesse as your helping others !
Now your taling to someone if if I have a plant not healthy growing poorly not seeming that it is going to grow up to be a healthy plant I throw it away too.

Thanks so much Allison. I have a few that I don't think I did correctly when I first started and they are taking up room that I need for my others. So I will just throw them out. Should I throw all of it away, including the cup?

Yes always use new cup/ or is you want to save soak them in hot water and bleach. Always dump soil never re-use. I dump all old soil in bucket and drinking water and Hubby puts them out in the garden beds. Jesse not your fault Mom leaves like othere leaves can died for no reason. Sometimes I set leaves down and next day their goen some totaly disapear or turn to mush. I figure why pot a baby up or re-pot something that is half dead when I can use mt energy, pots, soil, lights, space for a Healthy one !

Sometimes leaves just fail like that, even if they've started to strike roots. The only reason to try to cut it back & save it would be if it were your one & only leaf of that variety... otherwise, it's best to start again as Allison advised.

Good luck!

Sorry Jesse...like I said I was no professional...LOL!

Good thing you didn't listen to me!

Sorry it couldn't be saved.
