Anyone grow hardy hibiscus in the Carolinas?

Greetings and Salutations!

Spring has arriving here in NC. In just a few months it will be the time for my hardy Hibs to start blooming. This year will be exciting because I have some new varieties that will bloom for the first time. I grow hardy Hibs and for the past few years I've tried my hand at doing some crosses. Here is a photo of one the new crosses I came up with. It bloomed for the first time last summer. I have a limited supply of blooming size plants for those who would like to give them a try. The parentage comes from H. californicus which is a rare native plant in CA. If you want some more info about the plant or how to obtain one, please let me know.

that is a beautiful hibiscus - congratulations on your success :) have you named it? i discovered these beauties when i moved here ten years ago - i've got half a dozen cultivars - not nearly enough! if i hadn't left my file in the potting shed i could tell ya what they are. i had great luck with cuttings last year. i'd love to try this beauty - if i'm not too late, send me a d-mail.

i just bought my very first one yesterday. its called double apricot. at least thats what the nusery called it.

scared i would kill it as i have never done these before. i always see them in the nurseries but never had room. now i do have room and gonna try one.

any advice you can give me on the one i have will be great. as came with no recomendations like sun part shade food?? that sort of thing.

I've gotten some seeds from wonderful DG people. I'm gonna try my hand at these this year. Beautiful plant you have there - congradulations on your success!!

i've got several varieties i'm trying to start from seed ... it's been a month and no germination. i've read elsewhere that they aren't the easiest to germinate ... need bottom heat etc. i'm not at all hopeful.

I've been growing them for years with no problems. Have fun.

I'm just starting to do some landscaping at a beach house on Edisto Island.
If your Hibiscus will survive in salty, sandy soil, I'd love to give it a try.

paolo, we have a place on Edisto, isn't it just the greatest, unspoiled so far. The family has had a place at Edisto since the 1930's. I love it there.

Edisto is fabulous. My earlier posts concerned salt tolorant plants and grasses because all I've got now is spotty bermuda and sand.
We're going out there this week to get some painting and renovating done.

good to hear these are growing in NC... if they'll grow in Raleigh, surely they'll like the warmer coastal weather. anyone know how big they need to get before flowering? we got some free seedlings, only a few inches tall right now and only have leaves at ground level (started as bare-root twigs early March).

I have seen them for sale in pots blooming at 1 foot or so. Mine have been in the ground for years and come back every year, they usually are about 21/2 feet when they begin blooming.

I to also have some seeds I recently received from a swap. So it needs heat and a long time to germinate. I think the seeds I have are pink hardy type.

Hey,
We were working on the house for 2 weeks. We're on Palmetto Blvd and hope to get the place ready for the folks who rented it.
We've got it rented from May through August and we wanted to make sure it was ready and had all the extras those folks wanted.
I brought some white ginger, angel trumpets and canna lillies to add some color and I think they'll do ok as I planted them in pots of soil I brought with me.

It's on the water and it's newly renovated.
Every week from the beginning of May up to Sept. 2nd is taken, but only one week in Sept. is taken so you have your choice of the last 3 weeks.
