You fount your first bloom stalk Basket WOW ! What to do with it ?
This one has been on my trailer without a bloom for a long time. Glad it's still there so I can share what I do with my bloom stalk baskets !
It came from the African violet plant ; Pride's Pink Trail (5714) 04/11/1984 (C. Sotkiewicz) Double pink star. Black-green, pointed, quilted. Semiminiature trailer

Here's my tiny basket with a dime and a nickle !

I like potting my tiny bloom stalk leaves or baskets , even tiny suckers in these tiny pots. They have little hole on the bottom sides making it easy for them to drink . I like calling them Thumb Print pots.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I like to cut the stem short before potting it up in the little pot.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I fill my little Thumb Print pot over flow to top with light soil-less mixture.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I take my little basket and place it in the middle of my little pot gently pushing it as far as it can go until my basket is flush with the soil-less mixture.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I then sit the basket in the pot in a saucer of warm/hot water with food. I let it soaked it up for about 10-15 minutes. Then it goes under the lights, close. As easy as can be. It will be rooted within 5-7 days. And a blooming plant within 2-3 months. It's simple and easy .
Great way to progate Chimeras and to get new plants to share the joy with friends !
*** Water is cloudy has Murphy Oil soap in it. You don't have to do this . I had been watering and used jug I had.

In 2-3 months you will have a nice blooming Basket baby. This Chimera trailer was a Bollm stalk basket baby about 2 months ago ! It was the size of a dime or smaller just like the bloom slakt basket baby we just potted up.
I was luckt to get 5 of these basket babies all at once on my Chimera ! The best way to progate them. On died left me four. 2 were given as gift.

Sunray Trail (6475) 02/03/1987 (C. Sotkiewicz) Single chimera fuchsia star/white stripe. Light green, spooned, pointed, quilted. Standard trailer

Excellent tutorial Allison. Thank you!! (sticky material!)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Here is an other picture of Sunray trail Chimera basket baby growing up ! She was a bloom stlak baby just the begining/mid of Jan 2003 ! She was only the size of a dime.
I do my suckers the same way. If the sucker is a little larger it 's placed in a 2 oz. sqaut style dixie cup.
Bkoom Stalk baby baskets and sickers are a great simple easy way to progated African violets . A nice way to share the joy of African violets with your friends.
Have you share some leaves or plants with some friends latly ? Who have you introduced the Joy of growing and sharing Afrcian violets this year with ?
The best thing about growing and the ease of progating African Violets and Gesneriads is sharing the joy !

Thank you so much for the pictures. How big are the pots that you use?

Lilburn, GA

Thank you for the tutorial, Violet! Great explanation!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Sharon the pots are about one inch. They say 1 3/4 but no way one inch. I buy like 200 at a time. the little holes on the side makes it very easy to water !
Thanks Anna !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I use little 1 oz plastic condiment cups that are an inch across for thumbprint pots.... I poke a hole in the bottom with a hot skewer (does a whole stack as once, but you have to separate them before the melted plastic glues the whole stack together).

I do like the looks of those little pots that Allison has.... :-)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

The pots are Sturdy. I think Lali buys them too. I buy 2 inch, 3 inch round white sturdy and pan pots and more..
1 3/4 inch round, black

$.04 each $3.75 per 100 $17.50 per 500
Cat. No: 492 PLASTIC POTS

2 inch round, white, sturdy, made to last.

$.07 each $6.75 per 100 $33.00 per 500 $64.00 per 1000

The more you buy the little less they are !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I feel the basket baby from my bllom stalk looks like a sucker only smaller and roots just like a sucker.
So Jesse if you see this I root my suckers the same way !

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the info on the pots :-)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

YYour welcome I like all their pots. I go threw the 2 inch like water !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I know I showed these bloom stalk basket babies before but just had to share them again ! They bloomed when they were dime size too. :)) Just so cute. The ones that lived 4 out of five on does not look great I still have it but won't give it away if not meeting my standards.

Hurray! Good hunting. Way to stick with it. We should have it posted to the sticky. This way we can all find it when we want it.

POST TO STICKY< PLEASE

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes and put your's in the sticky please too !

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have read this but I still do not understand what the term "bloom basket" means. Is there another way to explain it?

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

There is a name for each part of the African violet plant. When you have a bloom stalk , and with the flower is a little baby growing it is called a " Basket" It's not a way to explain it that's what it is called.
Now this is not the one with two leaves, this is a flowet stem with a baby growing on it.
Just like anything else, Sucker, crown , leaf, basket !

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

There is still so much to learn but I'm willing. I'll just keep reading and hoping it will sink it.

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh don't worry about anything your doing fine. I have to read things over and over and do things for it to sink in !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I'll be potting the little bloom stalk baby above soon and will share and up-dated picture ! This one has grown a little slower than some but it sure is a nice little trailer baby !

Thanks for bumping this. I just bought Chico which has one of these and was planning to look for this thread. I'll post pictures when as soon as I can.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Eunice sent me Chico leaves !

It's gorgeous! I've gotta go fix supper, but let me see if I can find a pic real quick...
Here's Chico

Thumbnail by RainGazer

And here's an awful picture of the baby. See the cluster of leaves just to the right of the buds? They're growing on the bloom stalk.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

You can tell I need to repot it and trim off the damaged leaves, just groom it in general. I just got it on Friday and I haven't been able to repot it with my finger all bandaged up. I'll get to it in a few days - as soon as I can. I need to read back through this thread and plan exactly how to take care of that baby anyway.

Silver Spring, MD

Chico is beautiful. I love it.

I'm thrilled with it! I thought maybe it was a chimera when I first saw it. It's not, but I love that striped bloom anyway.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Amy where did you get this plant ? Beautiful. One of it's flowers are Chimera and many Chimeras have started out like this !

I got it at Walmart of all places! They have a hundred or more solid purple and solid pink ones - lovely, but not what I was looking for. So I stuck my head (and neck, and shoulders... LOL) way back in the shelf to see if there was anything else and there, buried in the middle of all those others was this one! The only one there! And I GOT IT! LOL
The Optimara site doesn't list it as being a chimera. How can you tell if it's truly a chimera or just a striped bloom?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Amy looks to me thise white stripes are Chimera . Chimeras are not going to be listed on their sight all Chimeras are Sports until grown out three generations and named.
If you are interested progate it by sucker or bloom stalks only and see if you get Chimera flowers. Most likely Bloom stalks from the Chimera flowers and Suckers from Chimera blooming side.

Allison, I'm getting ready to pot up this basket baby. How much of the stem should I leave attached to the baby to stick down in the soil?
