I have a chocolate question?!

Utica, MI(Zone 6b)

I would like to make a recepie that calls for unsweetened chocolate, but I only have milk choc. or semi-sweet, can I substitute one for the unsweetened? The recepie calls for three ounces unsweetened, how would I convert that to choc. pieces? Any help will be greatly appriciated. Thank you.
