Homalomena wendlandii

Honea Path, SC

Homalomenas are among my favorite of the genera in Araceae. Most of them can be found in SE Asia but this one is one of the dozen or so found in the Neotropics.

That is really neat. I am unfamiliar with that Genus altogether. Is it easy to care for or very difficult?

Michael, Will you be adding these to the PF? I just looked and there is only one listed and no pics.

A bit jelous here I can never keep that one a live. I might try again but I have to many to baby them like you get to. `

Some are easier than others Badseeds, its a large genus (around 150 spp. I think) and like I say most are Asian. The Asian ones do seem easier to me than these South American ones..like Brians says you have to baby them which is true. This particular one is rather difficult, needing hot and steamy temps and good draining soil. Others that can take a little more adversive temps are some of the hybdrids and the common ones like Homalomena "emerald gem" and rubescens. This one can get several feet tall I believe, although mine is only around 12-14 inches now.

Thank you. This is very interesting information. I've never heard of these and I love large leaved plants! I'm actually attracted to anything that is similar to elephant ears in appearance. I imagine if they can be difficult, it will be awhile before I'll go searching for them. I have enough to keep me busy right now. :)

That is so funny you posted this now, Michael. I just found a Homalomena "Emerald Gem" for the first time and was looking into them the other night. I too Chele, had never heard of them before.

Hi all.

With your climate description, it looks as though I am in the perfect place....
