Teeny tiny crocuses

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

I planted some crocus bulbs (from Lowes) last November and although they came up at the appropriate time this spring, they are tiny--maybe 2". I think they might have been species bulbs and not the giant Dutch crocuses, but they still seem rather small. Any ideas as to why?

Thanks

2" what? Flowers or height? Short plants often result from not getting enough water over winter. Otherwise, the corms may have been small. Nexy year will be better for you, no doubt.

When I lived in Minnesota we grew alot of crocus. The spring ones are in two kinds. One comes up real early and it is selected species (blue, white, lavender, yellow) the other is a hybrid usually 'Dutch Giants' and they come up later. If you have a picture with something in the photo to give scale I could tell you. My best guess is that they are the specie types, small but the first of spring and the will make big colonies if well situated. Good luck.
We can't grow then here in FL, even as annuals. I planted some when I first moved here and their foilage grew, but, they never bloomed. Bummer

Thanks... :) Will try to post a picture to scale in the next day or so. (I'm new to gardening so anytime ANYTHING grows, it's like a little miracle for me. :) )

I have some Crocus siebieri ssp sublimis f. tricolor (whew!) that is quite tiny. Mine were only an inch or so tall and the bloom maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch across. Foliage very thin and grasslike. Blooms (from tip to center) are purple, white, then yellow in the center.

Charming but not easy to grow.

Robert.
