Leaf Starting Experiment
Really Neat Laurie. Lot's of work too. Wish we had the notes on these projects.
Those are really cool pictures! I only had time to flip through them quickly, but I intend to go back and study them to see exactly how things worked out for you. I tried some leaves in water, but they seemed to be rotting, so I threw them away. I think I should have let them do their thing. I feel an experiment coming on... LOL
Hey Amy, thos aren't my photos, just another forum member posted them
Does anyone have a summary or an impression of the results?
I emailed the web page owner via the other forum (Violet Reflections) and asked the same question. no reply yet.
Would be great to know the results at least.
Yes I'd like to see notes and results also !
See how quickly I flipped through them, Lali? I never even looked to see who had created the album. :o)
I put two down in gel-2-root. They haven't rotted nor have they rooted yet. Will keep you up to date on that.
How long has it been Antia ?
Morning!
I have some leaves rooting in gel2root too. Me and my friend have a contest going she planted in soil-less mix and rooting powder.
I have a leaf I put in the gel on March 16th and I can see something is happening.
On the website it says it will take a month so I am waiting.

Sounds Fun ! Do you have pictures ? Keep us updated please.
I think I put them down ~3/10. I noted in another thread that I think I see one long root on one of the leaves, but it's hard to tell.
I looked at those photos as closely as possible and read the comments. It appears that there are as many ways to skin a cat- pardon me to all cat lovers- as there ways to root an AV! Wow. It appears that out of AV soil, vermiculite, peralite and her own mix, her own mix was the winner- it would be nice if she'd let us know what's in her mix, although I am guessing it's not much different than the mix Allison, etc. use.
In those photos that rooted in solution, the sugar sol seemed to have a strong network of roots as well as many babies and second to that was the sol of H2O & Superthrive.
I still have not rec'd an answer to a question I asked previously regarding rooting in solution; when I root other plants in solution they go into shock when they are transplanted to soil/mix- nearly always come out of it fine, but I am wondering if the same is true of AVs started in sol and if the recovery vs. death rate is simillar? Anybody know?
Another comment it's not perfectly clear but looked like the leaves were put down on 6/ something and the roots and babies were visable about a month later.
That time frame seems about right for what I get when I put leaves in my mix which is 1 part Miracle Grow/1 part perlite/ 1 part vermiculite.
I use to put 25 percent organci worm castings, vermiculite, perlite, por-mix, kelp meal, bat poop , fish emolsion .... but after a year and half or so I went easier and cheaper I now use Pro-Mix or something like it and vermiculite.
To be honest I don't see any growing difference or times for babies different. If I was ever to add sugar we'd have ants crazy. Yuk. Most times I have babies in 2-4 weeks sometimes faster sometimes longer.
I have been told water roots are different than soil roots and it is much better to root in soil not water.
On my leaf that I put down in rooting gel on the 16th of March there is definitely some activity happening but it is so very hard to tell.
I only have the one in the gel pac and it is right in the center of it, next time I will put it in a corner so I can see the results better.
Joanne
