Narcissus 'Rip van Winkle'

North Brunswick, NJ

I saw a few references to 'Rip' in another thread ("Simple pleasure: Narcissus pseudonarcissus") and thought I'd post a picture of one of the pots of it I entered in the Philadelphia Flower Show a few weeks ago. It was not a classically behaved cultivar for Show purposes - forget uniformity of height and relatively even distribution of the flowers - but it certainly was different and attention-getting!

Wow! That's beautiful, I love it - so cheerful looking.

Congratulations! What a healthy and beautiful looking pot of Rips!

What did you feed yours? Mine always look a little anemic (will post a pic when they bloom so you can advise!) Obviously you are the resident expert!

Did you get any more pics of the flower show entries?! If so, I'd love to see them!?

No feeding, which is part of my normal routine for a forced pot of daffs. Just lots of water during cold storage and plenty of fussing with the temperature once they're taken from storage. And some careful and unobtrusive staking and tying to make them stand up a little more proudly in bloom.

Here's a pic of one of my three rosette-winning pots of 'Chromacolor'.

And here's a shot of part of the daffodil classes in the 2006 Phila Flower Show.

Be-yoo-T-full R-van-Ws !!! One of the best photos of this cultivar that I've seen. I am sure to put in a bunch of that one this fall. Thanks for sharing it.

Lovely Chromacolors! And congratulations to you!!

The pinks are really nice aren't they? Wish more pinks were grown here!

The group picture takes me back to our daffodil season already pretty much over. Hoping that maybe some late varieties might be holding out, but I don't know.....

rrog-- thanks for the great pics and again Congratulations!

Would you mind explaining a little more about how to grow daffs for exhibit please ?

For instance--your favorite varieties and why? How many bulbs to a pot? Any special secrets to display? That sort of thing...for we newbies who might be interested in entering our local shows?

Obviously the Philly Show is a 'primo' event so I expect you are quite knowledgeable and anything you can share will surely build our confidence (and results!). t.

Ray! We saw your pot of 'Rip van Winkle' daffs at the show.... It stopped my mom dead in her tracks, saying, "now *those* daffodils I'd really like to have!" and she's been gardening long enough that she's getting hard to impress, LOL.

Congratulations on your rosettes... you surely grew some beauties for the show. :-)

I'll be ordering a bunch of them this fall also!

Rrog - where do you buy your bulbs? I suppose that is part of your secret to such beautiful plants.
Those Chromacolor were near perfect! In our part of the world, Rips are a very good naturalizer.
Congratulations on the recognition and awards!
