I have receive some Iochroma cyaneum 'Royal Blue' seeds, does any one knows how I should plant these seeds? They so tiny I don't know if I should cover them or just sprinkle them on top of the seed starting mix. Any help would be appreciated. I also posted this in the propagation forum, but I thought since this plant is a relative to the brugmansia somebody may know what to do as well.
Thanks
Iochroma Question
Clayton, I planted some white ones but I don't think they were that small. I just planted them and sprinkled a little mix on top. However, my rule of thumb, and I probably have about 85% germination rate, is that very small seeds normally do not need covering. I think they usually need the light.
I am sure someone will come along that knows better and say I am wrong. BTW I only planted 3 seeds and yes they all came up. But, if you have enough seeds why not try both ways?
I have no clue Clayton but Jeanette sure sounds like she knows. Very interesting about the smaller the seed! I will remember that. Thanks Jeanette!
Like Jeanette said, sprinkle them on top of the soil and water them in. You can sprinkle a little bit of potting soil or vermiculite over them, just don't put too much.
Clayton, out of curiosity, what did the people in the propagation forum say?
Jeanette
Hi Jeanette, the only person that was so kind to answer was Calalily. She told me pretty much the same as you.
Thanks,
Clayton
Clayton the way I was taught by an experienced Iochroma grower is to sprinkle them on top of a fine seedling mix, no soil covering, in a covered container in a bright East window. Spread 'em out good, because they don't transplant well at all. Mist them often, & you can use cammomile tea if they start to develop fungus.
When you transplant them, use a very free draining mix because they have a very low tolerance for wet roots. Good growing!
