Chimaras K_EYE_MEER_AHS

Chimeras are fun and interesting ! They are Sports and are sterile so can only be progated true bloom by suckers or bloom stalk/basket. I did read an article back couple years ago in AVSA magazine there is a percentage of Chimera leaves put down and will bloom true . But the percentage was low/I don't recall what it was.
The first Chimera Circus Boy was in 1951. There was also Circus Girl but she got lost. I read that thought a man named George Applegate may have been responsible for why Circus Boy's survived. He grew some Chimeras back in the 60's. He grew them simply beacasue he loved them and gave them away to his friends !

Cool lesson Teacher! The woman I spoke with today that gave me chimera Silver Summit (on it's way to you soon) said she grows and names several. She also said Silver Summit was very special, an older one and not often grown or seen. So when you propagate it, hang on to one for me for later.

Do you know if there are any Circus boy photos out there?

Next Saturday, I'll be on a chimera hunt (at the Sacremento sale/show). I'll be looking for
Girl Leaves
Chimera's
and
Green petals!

I think it was nice George grew Chimeras beacasue he loved them and gave them to his friends !
In 1972 , Grange Gardens came up with " Valencia" It was used for propagation. In 1981 " Valencia" was released to the buying public . Even at the unheard of price of $50.00 , it was in tremendous demand.
And in " 1981" $50.00 was a lot of money .

Yes the Webster's dictionary says, " Chimera ( KI-MIR'-A ) an impossible or foolish fancy living structure or organism in which the tissues are of varied genetic origin"

What is a Chimera?
The definition of a Chimera color plant is an individual organ or part consisting of tissues of diverse genetic constitutions and occuring especially in plants and most frequently in graft unions.
In Saintpaulias, a Chimera is a plant that morphologicaly will vary from its homologous character when vegetatively propagated. The phenotype will show color variations in the flower and the foliage. Some parts of the leaves and flowers may show part one color , and part another, or lack or color pigmentation in both flowers and leaves. Variegated plants, as we know them, have a partial or total lack of chlorophyll in the leaves and are in no way similar to this type of Chimera. Saintpaulias Chimera is of the Anthocyanin color range in the flowers and the foliage of this Chimera. The Anthocyanins control of the scarlet , blue, and red , and compose mixture of all three and white.

The ture analysis of a Chimera.
A chimera is a mixture of tissues of genetically different constitutions in the same part of an organism, namely that of the Somatic cell. It may result from mutation ( Sport) , irregular mitosis, somatic crossing ober , or produce the effect as artificial grafting as is noted in other thypes of plants.

There's a great article on chimeras in my recently-arrived AVSA magazine... I will try to summarize and/or quote from it to post here... but not tonight, LOL. Interesting that the different genetic components come from ectodermal & mesodermal tissue... and if one or the other "takes over," then you lose one of the colors in the pinwheel blooms... apparantly it's fairly common for chimeras to change like that, even if you've had them blooming in their pinwheel colors for years.

Hmmm, I wonder if it would violate "fair use" to scan the article and post it as a photo... I should probably contact AVSA and find out... it may be OK as long as I give proper credit to both author & publication.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks Amy it may come around be nice if the green comes back. But lali really has the Chimera Sport ! So beautiful !

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Actually, Ali, it looks like your pink edges are sprinkled. I enlarged your photo and it sure looked like it was 'dusted' with little pink sprinkles darker than the pink edges. What does it look like in real life up close?

Either way, they are both beauties. So now the hunt is on for the original Irish paradise.

Here's a quesiton, If I put a leaf down, will it revert to one of the Irish Paradise parents? Could I actually get the original parent back?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

You could try never know / I saw a Irish Paradie leaf go for about $ 17.00 Eleimcat bought. I paid a lot for Mom almost 2 years ago forgt how much $$$. I like the Chimera though and if the Chimera could get green it it be even better :))
