I just bought a 20 gallon tank to create a terrarium in
I have a bonsai tree I got from hirts that is going in it.
I think I am also going to put some of my mini and micro mini AVs in there
but was wondering if any of you have mini plants (any genus) you are looking to trade off?
I am open to anything :)
Also if anyone knows a good place to buy miniature plants :) I would love to know
Mini plants for my new terrarium
Sorry I don't. But I am very excited to see it when you finish. Good luck
I am excited to give it a try :)
Lorry would any of these from Violet Barn be good ?
miniature tropical houseplants that are ideal for container gardens.

I ;pve the little bromalaid with the pretty pink you sent me :))
I am new to the minis, so I have to let mine grow a bit before I start taking leaves to experiment with. Seems like mini trailers would make for a lovely "groundcover' in there.
Kenton
(I don't know where else to put this and don't want to start a whole thread if it is a quick answer, but where is Bob (junglebob)?)
Rob's violets has some nice mini plants
http://www.robsviolet.com/miniature_houseplants.htm
selaginella is a good one (palm hammock had some nice ones) maybe Logees.
I have a very small rhizo begonia that needs a haircut. B. 'Susi' as well as b. fuschioides, b. foliosa too.
I also have a pilea (I think it's called arterial fern?) that's pretty cute. They should all root in spagnum moss.
I'll try and find some photos.
Kenton...I remember junglebob posting he was going to take time off from this forum needed to do things at home or something like that. hope this helps
Begonia...The pilea is that the fern that shoots its seed? i have been reading about it in my miracle gro dictionary of plants and love it!!!!!!! tried to find one around here but have been unsuccessful where did u get yours?
Lorry i just made a 10 gallon into a cactus terrarium today. it turned out beautiful! i wish you luck with yours. i hope mine does well. it has the flourscent lighting so maybe it will.
Kelly
Heh Laurie ypu were thinking the same thing as I ! Only I was a few minutes faster. lol Rob has vute pictures. I'm surprised Lorry has not seen these cute little plants ! I'm always looking at them :))
Yup I am looking at violet barn for several of the things I want :)
I am hunting now for my minis I already have here :") So I have been there :) Just wanted to see what people had here first
Kenton :) I already pulled several of my mini trailers for just that purpose :)
Laurie..I am looking at several from rob :) especially the mini bamboos :) If you have anything to send that is great :) and I am going to place an order also.
I have some mini episcia that I am going to put in there also :) I love the lil begonia and would LOVE some..the fern thing would be awesome too :)
Anything to get it all started :)
(Thanks, Kelly, I understand his sentiment. One can be eaten by this forum!)
Kelly, I got mine from this guy on eBay a long time ago. here's a item # 7753607402 since the ebay links dont want to work here.
I never heard of it shooting seeds so let me know if they are one in the same.
I'll try and fix up a box to go out over the weekend.
Oh please don't hurry Laurie :) I have a ton of stuff to do to get it ready plus I have some stuff here I am gathering up for it :)
I have micro mini sinningias, codonanthe (that can be used as a trailer), tons of phinaea, and some small hoya thingies. The usual suspects.
Laurie...My miracle gro encyclopedia of plant care says Pilea microphylla also known as artillery plants are ferny plants that shoot ripe seeds sometimes even across the room! Says if you can catch them you can easily start new plants. also propagates easily from stem cuttings. i am amazed! maybe you will see it happen someday! that would be neat!!!! Sounds interesting to me!
Kelly
Cool keyring :)
Maybe we can trade for some of the other gesneria I had that you were interested in :)
Kelly, I guess I should hang out with my baseball glove on to catch a few fly balls er uh.. seeds! LOL!
It hangs out in the greenhouse so I likely missed the seed throwing event and will catch the end of it when I find little artillery ferns popping up around the benches etc. LOL!
Yes Lorry a lot of Bob's Mini's are really cool . I like the funky looking Mini Christmas tree he has !
Kenton and Kelly I don't think Bob was just eaten up by this forum ..I think he loves our forum and all of us he was eaton up by something different on DG's.
It's nice though Kelly he has been coming in to see us :))
yes allison i have noticed him coming in some. i just regret not getting to know him better. i was just getting active when he took time off. i know all of you love him! maybe he will be back full force in no time! everyone have a wonderful day today!
Kelly
Oh he will be back in and out !
WildBob is real nice too ! I'm going to send him a bunch of plants too !
So I think we have two or three Bobs growing African violets ! Everyone is Special :))
allison how are you today?
Kelly
Lorry, I've got a plant that looks like a miniature ivy that SarahJo shared with me (Ficus pumillis, I think)... It's not a fast grower, but it can spare a little rooted bit or two... I'll add it to your wish list.
Well critter hun..don't attack a plant that can not spare it..but if it has extra..I would love some :)
I am going to start laying down the rock and such tonight and hopefully begin working with the plants I have now :)
Hey Critter where've ya been? I missed you for a few days.
And if your plant is small Critter, I have tons of that ficus, it's pretty weedy here. Everyone grows it on their stucco homes, walls etc.
Cool Laurie :)
Has anyone ordered from this place before?
They have some fabulous prices on cryptanthus and other terrarium plants.
http://glasshouseworks.com/
You try it out Lorry and let us know :)) I got stuck looking they have a lot of nice plants :))
Lorry is CRYPTANTHUS like Bromaliad's ?
My friend Butch has ordered from them with success, but be forewarned, they send the wrong plants at times. Mislabeled.
But yes, they are a good company to work with, so I've been told.
go have a lookie at their begonias. they have one of the best selections. I have a want list a mile long for them. I was waiting to order until I went to FL and see what I was able to get at Palm Hammock.
But I'll be placing my order in about a month. Once I can move stuff out of my greenhouse for the season and make room for more begonias. (grin)
A cryptanthus is a bromeliad Allison :) also known as earth starts...Cryptanthus are true ground plants though where as most bromeliads are not :)
Cryptanthus as also VERY easy to keep :) I sent you a little red baby one :)
Laurie..Next time I am in Miami I am going to go to Palm Hammock :) It sounds like a cool place! I also went and placed an order. I will let you all know :)
Since it is for my terrarium..I am not overly worried about mislabels :) especially with the prices I just paid :) I bought some cryptanthus :) and some begonias and some other little plants :)
I also have a BIG plant sale at Lieu garden to go to on Saturday..It is labeled as the largest selection of plants in Central FL (Woohooo) So Chris and I are going. It is in Orlando which is only a couple of hours for me :)
Hey Laurie....Would the cute little pink begonia I bought be good for a terrarium? I think I could take a cutting and keep it small enough. It is very colorful and might work well in there if it can take it :)
Lorry I love my Cryptanthus baby ! So colorful ! How big will it get and should it grow insidee pot or outside the ground ?
Lorry, that begonia should do fine, but I've seen them get big. Like 1-1.5' tall. It all depends, you can easily pinch it back when it gets too big, but may sacrifice the flowers.
You lucky duck on the plant sale. I'm going to this one on the 1st

Hmmm... I just looked up Ficus pumila in PF, and I think mine is something else...
Here's a photo. You can see it can spare a piece or two! :-)
Oh! I looked it up some more, and it's just a different variety... F. pumila 'Quercifolia', miniature oakleaf fig. http://www.davesgarden.com/pf/go/102347/index.html
YEA! Critter, that's the one I was saying I want to get ! you're a lucky duck to have it! ( I can't remember where I said it, thought it was here but it may have been in an email to Lorry) (I'm just confused! LOL)
That one is a beauty!!!
I'll put it on your wish list too, begonia! I actually have a second little pot of it upstairs with the AVs... I'll split it between you & Lorry, and then I'll pot up another little piece because I'll bet Nanna "needs" some in her new terrarium!
{{{Critter}}} thank you ! I'd love it!
Awh thanks Critter :) You are such a sweetie :)
Hey, you can thank SarahJo for sharing it with me in the first place!
I love the way we pass favorite plants around here.... :-)
Yes Jill :)) It sure is wonderful.
Oh Lorry thinking of sharing people were posting on the second secret swap shipping date is it May 15th-16th. and how many plants and leaves...
Can you go there and fill in all the questions please I did not know how to answer them all. Thanks Allison
