Salvia

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The salvia is ready for hungry hummers. If you look to the far right you will see a pot of nasturtiums that the giant white cats are devouring.

Yep...hummies love salvias.

But what kind of cats are eating your nasturtiums??? Are you talking about Great Southern White butterfly (ascia monuste) caterpillars or Giant White butterfly (ganyra josephina) caterpillars?

I wasn't aware that the Giant Whites ate nasturtiums...I thought they only munched on capers?

Hmmm...that might be an incentive to grow nasturtiums :o)

I'm sorry, they are Great Southern Whites. I'm still learning this butterfly stuff and was switching between two books and I got the name wrong.

Susie, what kind of salvia is that?

Larry, I got it at Walmart, it was labeled Autumn Sage, salvia gregii. It blooms year round, as long as we dont' get a frost.

I have read that Salvia gregii is one of the best for butterflies. Karen

I love flowering sages! Someday I'd like to have a bed of just different kinds of flowering sage. Yours is a wonderful color. I have had really good luck with meican sage and pineapple sage but had to dig it up after 4 years because it totally grew over the sidewalk that goes to our front door. And those two overwintered in my zone 6 yard. I would like to make a bed where it can really go to town and get as big and tall as it wants to lol!.

Tennessee was a great state to grow salvia in. I had a lot of different ones when I lived there. My guaranitica loved it there.

Karen-
The butterflies are as interested in salvia greggii as the hummingbirds in my garden.
