I love those! I actually hauled one home from the Miami Home Depot with me! LOL. i smashed it in the rubbermaid container and mushed up the root ball to make it fit, and it seemed to say thanks by blooming some more! LOL.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL..cool
I bought a box with 17 of them in it..out of bloom....I paid them 5.00 for it :)
so I am curious to see what they bloom like :) I may have double to share!
Once they start blooming again :)

If you ever need more..let me know :) I can always pick some up for you here..Our nursery carries every color..both single and double

You know they are like a bulb (Help us out here Key?) like a tuber of some kind. So if they lose their leaves, dont toss them. I'd bump them with some Mir. Grow or other AV food and see if they'll rebloom for you. I bet you can even put them in the ground where you live.

this one is still sitting there like a bump on a log! But I'm waiting patiently.

while out in my front jungle today..i noticed that the gloxinia speciosa (florist gloxinia) that has been sitting out there for 5 years has decided to come back once again...the 3 or 4 months of darkness that it got from the tall snow on mt bushes causes it to regain energy in its tuber i believe...now remember we had some days of 30 degrees for a couple of hours...so that buggar is something else...i will take a pic of it reemergence tomorrow...they are a glorious plant...and do i not recall from many years ago that one can cut the veins in the leaves and babies will appear....think the ones from seeds are just called sinningia....here's a link about propagation

A: Just to warn you, the florist gloxinia (Sinningia spp) is a tough one to
propagate. Perhaps the easiest way is to take leaves and lay them flat over ...

generally speaking...if one has a misting system....(preferably in a green house)...this is the easiest way to propagate most plants....the trick is to try and trick the cuttings/leaves/plants/ etc into thinking they ARE being misted...guess that's where plastic domes and the like come in...course in florida here.our high humidity helps.

Abilene, TX

There is a story on this plant in the most recent AV magazine with great pictures, for anyone who is interested. : ) Beautiful, Lorry.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

they are easiest to propagate from seed! 5-6 months to blooming!

(I know, I know... I keep saying this... but they are really easy from seed. oooops! said it again :X

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Key....lol...keep it up...we need to try everything...but i think there is a difference between the tuber ones and the ones grown from seed...

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

here's the pics i promised in the thread above about my gloxinia that has been outside for 5 years...lol....it has been a real survivor.

Right..Laurie..I have grown them from the seed before...Like the one you are trying..it is a big mushy looking thing LOL
I have also lost my first one..I thought it was dead but threw it in the ground and it grew :)

Cool Bob and thanks Keyring :)

I will have to read that Pam. I have not had a chance to read my magazine yet but it is sitting on the counter.

Oh Lorry beautiful ! They are the easiest to preogate even from a cutting. Couple years ago a friend gave a little peice of one about same color as your's. It was so tiny about 2-3 inches tall at the most. Stuck it and soil and it grew like Jack in the Bean Stalk Bushy and stunning always blooming I did not have to do anything to it. I grew many plants from it large into blooming. When we moved here couple Nurses were coming to get furnisture we would not have room for and I gave me last large one in bloom to one of the Nurses. I am so Happy I did it made her day and I just don't have the room. Though they will grow outside in Florida :))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Keyring won't the ones grown by seed form a tuber ?
The cutting my friend gave me grew a tuber .

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I will have to give propogating them from leaf a try :)
Did you do it like you would an AV?
I would love to share these around with people :) I had never seen the doubles before!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry I did not just take a leaf I took a group crown like cuttings . Filled pot with soil stuck it in watered and it rooted super fast like Epsicas for me :))

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

yup, if you grow them from seed, they will form a tuber.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

ah like a sucker?
Several of the ones I got have sucker looking things on them :)

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

the suckers will root and reach blooming size faster than propagating by leaf, so if you have excess, why not propagate that way? But I think a good way to grow them is to trim off the old crown after blooming, and let the new crowns develop and bloom.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes that's how I did them suckers or like Keyring said
and they rooted and bloomed real fast for me. They Multiply so fast you could have a whole garden full Lorry and I bet they love our humidity !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Cool :) I will do that with the ones I just got..I bought 17 non blooming for 5.00 and figured I would use them to share with my trade partners.

I will use your suggestion with the others Keyring :) thanks so much for your help guys :)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

on the thread i have above..sent last night...it explains how to propagate from leaves....usually laying the leaf on some vermiculite...etc....criss crossing the veins in the leaves with a knife....than in plastic or whatever you use for humidity..etc

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Cool Bob thanks !
I have done it a lot with mine also. And I just stuck them in soil-less mix watered and within a week they were rooted and going to twon growing :))

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

So how easy is a leaf cutting, i'm tempted since mine could easily spare a leaf. Spring is here and everyone wants to grow so if I were to do it now would be as good a time as any. (and since I haven't killed it yet)

I did discover that they can wilt from lack of water and perk right back up if you water them! LOL

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

leaf to me is waste of time takes too long.
Lorry where dis you say you bought them ?

Those are gorgeous, Lorry! Thanks for sharing pictures!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Our local nursery. I go there every weekend so they know me LOL
I bought the three I posted here for 3 for 12.00 or 5.88 a piece.
She then asked if I was interested in buying a lot of them without flowers and brought out a HUGE box...I asked how much and she said 5.00 so I bought the whole box and brought it home...There were 17 in there..none of em in bloom but I am going to take the basket babies off and try to grow them..perhaps I can share them with my secret bunny friends and also send some with my trade partners :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Sounds like a good deal. If I had all them I take some of each to root for inside for insurance and plant them all in the garden . My one Av planted ouside is doing real good and has not stopped blooming. Going to give Hubby more to plant out !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok I am planting up sucker babies from the windfall of gloxinia I got :)
I want to know who will want some in their next box :) Please don't be shy LOL
I think I will have LOTS
Now I don't know the colors of them sooo it is a mixed lot :) Unless you want basket babies from the ones I have pictures of here

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Lorry...the new March/April African Violet Magazine has a good article and photos of Gloxinia on pages 51 - 53. You might want to take a look. Very pretty pics.

Lorry was just looking at these beauties again ! Key had put the link in a posting. They are so beautiful.
How are they doing ! Have you rooted any new plants from them ?

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I never tried rooting them..>Didn't seem there was much interest in owning them :)
They have since been planted in the back yard with quite a few of the other gloxinia I got from the nursery :) the ones that I got for 5.00 :) for a HUGE box :)
they all seem to be happy and healthy there :) and many are starting to bud again :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

That's wonderful ! I love them thou only owened one. I got a little section rootless in a trade. It rooted and grew fast and always bloomed. I rooted several plants from it sharing them. The last two they were large 6 inch pots full in bloom one went ot my sister in law for her birthday and the other went to a Nurse. Gosh this was a year last Nov. we were so tired and I have so many plants to pack up I did not bother taking a cutting. Maybe someday I will get another one and grow it hanging in the screen room !
