My lil Maya Project has ROOOOTS!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I broke this tiny sucker off when I opened my Maya from it's shipping tube... it was so tiny and had no leaves left, so I thought I had no hope. I put it in a rapid rooter plug and put it in a 9oz cup "greenhouse" and just kept it wet.. Today when I was inspecting for mites AGAIN.. I peek in and I see ROOOOOOOOOTS! I am so tickled.. it took forever, but she is gonna be okay! I just love the little tiny thing.

I feel your excitement. I was given a tiny like 2" cutting of Mountain Magic. After reading a thread on rooting in orchid moss, I decided to try it. Yesterday I lifted it out and took a peak and it has two roots on it. You can't believe how excited I am.

I just love Maya, my favorite brug. I let two side shoots develope this year, I've never rooted Maya before, but I think I should get them off the mother plant and try rooting... Nice, ZZ.

Wow! It has gotten big. Yes, their growthrate is amazing, isn' t it?

I am impressed Joyce. You did great at both rooting and at growing it. It looks so healthy. If this is from the original Maya growing project, that baby is from my yard. I am so glad you have a piece of it!

Are those hydroponics thingies in the fist pic around your rapid rooter plug? What do they do?
Thanks

AuntB... I sure will take a different approach next time I go hacking on my Maya ever again. I recently moved, and I can't root anything in this water! It just goes to mush... Go figure.. it's not even 10 houses from my old house, but I have not been able to root NEAR as much as I could at the other house... So I bought some distilled water the other day and now everything is rooting great.. but before I found this out.. This is the story...

Kell, I didn't know there was an original "Maya Project"... too bad... cause I'd like to have anything that came from your yard! I only called it my project cause I was trying to create an incubator for the tiny lil thing I broke off. LOL

I bought the plant from SeedSprout.com and when it got here I accidently broke a tiny sucker off... I put it in a rapid rooter plug, but it wouldn't stand up in the lil cup... So I used some of the clay balls I had for the bubbler... that kept it upright and I could see if there was too much water in the cup through the cracks between the clay balls... and when they dry out they get very pale.. so I could tell when it was too dry too..

The original plant had Y'd several times, it was big and so healthy... It had a sucker that was almost as big as the parent plant.. So I chopped that off a couple of months ago.. I tried to root it, but it died.. then the parent plant died back to nearly nothing.... it is now just a stick with some new growth up the middle... So I was so worried that I was gonna loose Maya all together!! I'm so glad I have this one.

So tell me about the Maya Growing Project Kell... Sounds interesting!!

Oh, maybe I WON'T whack on it.... just let them stay. I don't want to chance the mother plant. She's my favorite brug, she's on the deck making a spectacle of herself. I heard somewhere it doesn't root in water... Yes, Kell tell us...

I'm with you AuntB.. I will never take another big cutting off Maya... never ever again! I love Maya so much, it just makes me sick to see her so gaunt and lifeless..
I took the mother plant out of the pot yesterday to repot in a smaller one... The root system was about a third of what it was originally. I guess it didn't need so much energy when it was 1/2 the size after being chopped down..... I don't know, but I repotted in fresh soil and we will see what happens. I hope I don't loose what little growth I have on her.
I am partial to anything with veriegated leaves.. I have a cutting off a veriegated Hydrangea that sent out an albino sucker the other day.. I am in love!!

This thread is more or less about propagation of a varigated variety so I'd like to as a kind'a related question. I love varigated plants but have no v. brug. and can not see paying the outrageous price that is being asked at the only sources I have for purchasing plants around here. Is varigation passed on through seed grown plants? I have seen ads for seeds of varigates--would I be wasting my time and money on trying to grow varigated varieties from seeds.

Can't help ya on that one Gessieviolet.. I never tried vari seeds.. I got the parent plant from Seedsprout.com and it was a VERY reasonable price considering the shipping was included. It would take way too long and way too much frustration to get a plant the size I did for the price I paid...
