Squirrels

Vancouver, WA(Zone 7a)

I was wondering if anyone could tell me which bulbs seem to be squirrel favorites and which ones they tend to stay away from. My elderly neighbor lady (bless her heart) loves them and insists on feeding them peanuts all of the time. As a result, my yard is overrun with brave, fat, sassy squirrels who love to munch on my crocuses and tulips. So far, they haven't touched my daffodils, hyacinths or muscari.

Anyone else have any suggestions on what they love/hate?

I hear they really like tulips and hyacinths . I have no problems with the daffodils, alliums and all the small bulbs - muscari and such..Also I have a lot of species tulips and have no problems with those either. Mind you it must be said the squirrels probably dont get to spend a lot of time in the flower beds because of the dogs - the squirrels are usually up running on the fences or climbing the trees. But I have lots of those bulbs in the front yard and no problems there either.

Try putting up a bird feeder that is accesible to the squirrels and filling it with sunflower seed - or putting some corn cobs on spikes on the fence. - might distract them.

You'd think my neighbor putting out peanuts all of the time would fill them up enough that they wouldn't bother my bulbs. Alas, no.

Thanks for the input!

Narcissus is a good choice as they are toxic to rodents, including voles and squirrels. I just don't know how the word got around though..... :-)

Squirrells like variety, too, I guess, and maybe they need a balanced diet. Last year one developed a passion for hibiscus buds and blooms and broke a few stems on our tropical topiary going up and down it. Guess it counts as a vegetable.

They also have *tons* of acorns to eat, but of course prefer the wild bird mix.

I love animals. It's their behaviour I have problems with.

Robert.
