A new idea for people who wick water

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok I am trying a few different watering methods...one is the capillary mats.

But I also bought some carry tray for my pots..then I bought one solid tray and one with the holes in it.
I filled the carry tray with pots..wicked them..and then put them in the tray with holes..pulling all the wicks through the holes. Then set the one with the holes in the solid tray and put water in the bottom of the solid tray.
I will take photos tonight to show you guys exactly what I mean. I think this will work well for my littler plants.

Silver Spring, MD

Sounds very interesting. Can't wait to see the photos

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

It is cheaper then buying the humidity trays...and the trays with holes fit a wick very nicely. I bought them all at novella..including the pots fairly cheaply.

I think I am also going to try the light fixture grids for my larger plants...that is an awesome idea :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Sounds really neat Lorry :)) WOuld you just put a little water in at a time as the pots are close so they drink too much. Where did you buy them ? Can't wait to see !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I bought them at Novella
You fill the bottom tray..the second tray hovers above the solid tray so they are not sitting in the water :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry I never heard of Novella ? Is it on line ? A store you go to ? How big are they ? Thanks, Allison

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

cool Lorry, I just ordered pots from them and some black carry trays, just the standard type.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

They ship pretty fast and they have nice stuff :)
I may be ordering some more black trays also :) Since they help keeping everything more compact :) I am also loving the wicking with those trays :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

OH yes I prdered about 100.00 of pots from them lol did not put the name together. THeir all soaking in our bath tub. lol

Did you already get some Lorry ? Which ones.
I use their 4 and 5 inch azlea pots lower what Av's like, and their 2.25 and 2.50 pots. And bought some 12 inch hanging.
My 2 inch, 3 inch, pan pots , thumb pots and more I get from other company they have white sturdy pots.

Girl, you've got a regular nursery going on there! Looks great! And you've been busy!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL...trying to cut down on watering time :)

Denver, CO

Lorry, Well done. I like your no-nonesense yet attractive shelving system. Keep us informed.

I have put a thought (not a long one) into using felt as a wicking pad. Any opinoins/conjecture? Or should I just try it?
Kenton

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Felt would probably work. I have many of mine on the towels and so far so good. I also bought some of the wicking material from Bluebirds :)

The shelves LOL...well it was CHEAP :) I just painted cement blocks and then painted the wood and there you go...plant stand :) that is outdoors in my FL room. I also took over one of the spare bedrooms :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Looks great Lorry ! Thanks for the pictures and sharing :)) Plants look great !
I have tried several times over the past few years using dandy pots and when ever I do they get too much wanter and dead in a week. Do I've just given up on them.
Now are the pots on the trays is there soil around the outside of the pots also ? Also wondering as plants grow super fast will there be enough space for room for them to grow properly and air circulation ?
I did read in some old AV Amg. That using a wicking pad can add to problems of ganats and mildew, algea. So when I read that I thought nope not for me. I'm sure it will wokr for a lot of people I keep fan in room open to garden room and in garden room but have so much humidity .

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

The soil is in the pots..the pots are in a carry tray which is then laid on the wicking system.
I tried to keep them spaced out enough .

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

They look really neat. And you got the carry case same place. I guess if the plants were largerer you could put less plants in the tray ?

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Right..with the larger plants..I put them in ever other tray compartment.
Yup I bought all the supplies at one place.
I bought the carry trays, the trays with holes and the solid trays :)

It keeps them from tipping over also

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Carry trays are great addition. I would have never though of this part . Also their low cost. I like easy low cost . might just try a few. !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh they are fabulous! I was always knocking my poor babies over when I watered or something..now they are nestled all safe and sound. I can move the trays around without anyone getting injured :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh gosh sounds like what I need I'm always dropping plants. I no longer trans-plant a tray of babies all nice and pretty and drop some on the floor.
What about the 2 inch minatures I grow mostly them will it work for them too ?

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Well I did this....I bought the 2.5 square carry trays...I then did a pot in a pot thing :) I just nestled the 2 inch round pot in the square pot..I then wicked it just like I did with all the others.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh Ok cool they have different sizes

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh yes..I bought the 4 inch round carry trays...The 2.5 inch square carry trays and the 3 inch square carry trays :) they have em in all sizes

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

and they fit right on your plant stands under your lights ? This was a good idea Lorry ! Thanks for sharing it :))

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Yup..they sure do :)./..I put them in the trays w ith holes...and then the solid tray and water that way. I fit three trays on one rack :)

And I hope it works well for ya Allison :)
